Description

Assist special education teachers in maintaining a positive learning environment in the classroom, ensuring the continuance of the education program developed by the teacher.

Must be willing to frequently get up and down off of the floor to work with and keep up with young children.

Must be high energy and able to keep alert to every child in the classroom.

Assists with planning and implementing individual and group strategies for students as so defined by student's Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Assists in maintaining up-to-date records on each student, describing strategies for each student's program.

Works closely with teacher as a member of the educational team to continually modify program for each student.

Assists student with dressing, toileting, feeding, and self-care as needed.

Participates in regular staff meetings, if appropriate.

Reads, understands, and is responsible for implementing and documenting behavior plan and/or individualized education program, as appropriate.

Observes and intervenes to redirect inappropriate behavior.

Follows building, classroom, district, and/or organizational policies.

Keeps current with related technology and developments that impact the division and the organization.

Makes decisions consistent with the LIU mission and core values, establishes and maintains effective communication and positive relationships within the LIU, and fosters professional development of LIU staff.

Contributes to the effective team management of all issues and opportunities within the LIU by modeling the qualities of an LIU Team member (being versatile, ethical, transparent, team-oriented, innovative, transformative and collaborative; valuing each team member; and understanding the importance of customer service.)

Understands organizational development and change principles and applies these principles to promote improvement within the Division.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma/GED required

  • Experience working with preschool special needs children preferred

  • All paraprofessionals must also complete twenty (20) hours of professional development related to their assignment each school year in order to continue employment.

  • Must obtain "qualified" status within one (1) year from date of hire

"Qualified" means having an associate's degree or higher; or having completed 2 years of postsecondary study; or meeting a rigorous standard of quality as demonstrated through a state or local assessment (CAPE test or Certificate of Competency).

Terms of Employment

Full-time, 7-hour day, 188- day working year. The Preschool Program operates on a unique stretch schedule throughout the entire year, including summer.

Salary

Minimum $14.50/hour, plus comprehensive benefits. Access to the Lincoln Health and Wellness Center now available to eligible employees.
