AES US Utilities is seeking a Director to lead the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Planning and Asset Management teams. Reporting to the Chief Utility Innovation Officer, the successful candidate will lead an organization responsible for Asset Management, Planning, Forecasting, and Norms and Standards. This team sets the vision and drives reliability/performance improvements and system expansion efforts for T&D, using a collaborative, integrated point-of-view approach, and data-driven analysis. The successful candidate provides technical and managerial guidance to the company based on sound analysis and in the spirit of continual improvement to strategically advise on future business, financial, and regulatory scenarios impacting T&D expansion and intra-year reliability performance.

Position Summary:

  • The Leader of T&D Planning and Asset Management, is responsible for

Collaboratively creating the overall annual budget for T&D to ensure we maximize reliability and operational benefits to meet future customer needs while working with constrained resources,

Developing the strategy to meet evolving customer needs through customer needs analysis and T&D power flow forecasting and modeling in support of regulatory initiatives, reliability programs, and capacity expansion needs,

Setting and driving the asset management strategy by establishing reliability, operational, and financial KPIs for T&D by using statistical and machine-learning modeling to predict system, program, circuit, sub-circuit, and asset-level performance,

Developing T&D asset life cycle plans and leading root cause analysis to create year-over-year improvements in reliability and asset selection, and

Ensuring AES U. S. Utilities' transmission and distribution (T&D) assets are meeting their planned financial and operational performance objectives.

  • The leader prioritizes business and regulatory objectives, fostering relationships with experts and leaders throughout the company.

  • The leader and their team will employ sophisticated statistical techniques, predictive modeling, machine learning, and innovative algorithms, utilizing diverse data sources, to identify trends and relationships between different pieces of data, draw appropriate conclusions, and translate analytical findings into risk management and operational strategies that drive value.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited College or University or equivalent work experience

  • At least 10 years of experience in the utilities industry, preferably in Transmission, Distribution, Planning, and/or Analytics-related functions

  • Highly analytical with demonstrable experience using a variety of mathematical modeling techniques

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated superior leadership and talent development skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with state and/or Federal regulatory proceedings

  • Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)

  • Six Sigma Certification

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee reliability strategy initiatives and improvements.

  • Collaboratively guide the T&D budget (CapEx & OpEx) setting process, ensuring proper tradeoff and business case analyses are complete and logical relative to stated goals.

  • Guide annual and periodic forecasting and planning activities to ensure capacity additions and reliability work meets customer, operational, and regulatory goals while working with constrained resources.

  • Oversee the development, monitoring, and reporting of T&D KPIs based on industry standards and rigorous statistical/analytical analysis.

  • Ensure the robust development of asset performance improvement opportunities, utilizing knowledge of predictive maintenance techniques to guide teams and drive continuous improvement.

  • Oversee the quality and execution of root cause analyses (RCAs) for any significant T&D equipment failures or unusual customer outages. Additionally, ensure all recommendations from RCAs are implemented across the US T&D businesses.

  • Support or sponsor testimony, where necessary, for various T&D related regulatory activities.

  • Develop processes and tools necessary to scale up innovative programs.

  • Improve overall data quality and implement processes to improve data quality and collection.
