Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Faculty Director of the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), the Taxpayer Staff Attorney handles legal representation, including administrative disputes with the IRS, litigation in Tax Court and Federal courts, and other taxpayer education and advocacy for LITC client cases and other clinic legal matters by providing legal services to LITC clients, while collaborating with clinic faculty, paralegals, staff and students. The LITC Staff Attorney will also supervise the law school Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (in coordination with the law school Pro Bono director) and engage in other outreach and client development efforts, as well as taxpayer education for underserved communities.
Required Education and Experience
Juris Doctorate degree and 2 years related legal experience. Must be a member in good standing of the South Carolina bar, and must be admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court or eligible for such admission.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer that a candidate have at least three years of practice experience with sufficient tax law expertise to perform and oversee the substantive and procedural aspects of client representation in controversies with the IRS. Desire a candidate with a commitment to or demonstrated record of institutional or public service. Service to the School of Law and University is expected and may include relevant extracurricular activities.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Excellent writing and verbal communications skills.
Proven extensive legal experience in tax controversy, tax law and related areas.
Ability to collaborate with law school faculty, staff and students.
Ability to work for and with taxpayers in need who will be requesting clinical assistance.
