The Department of Revenue, Tax Division is recruiting for a Tax Technician 1/2/3 (PCN 04-3041) to join our Juneau Corporation Income Tax section

The Juneau Corporation Income Tax section is a group of Tax Technicians working together in an open environment which encourages collaboration and communication in an effort to get the work accomplished.  The Corporation Income Tax section receives approximately 18,000 corporation net income tax returns annually, which are processed through the Tax Revenue Management System.

The Tax Technicians work on returns identified by the system to require examination.  This position performs examinations primarily on multi-state corporations, but may work on in-state corporate returns including S-corporations, Exempt organizations, and Homeowners Associations. More complex returns include amended returns. Tax experience is not required as we offer on the job training.

The Department of Revenue, Tax Division is charged with collecting state taxes and administering tax laws.  We also regulate charitable gaming and provide revenue estimating and economic forecasting.  We promote compliance through quality service and fair administration. We provide accurate and timely information to Alaska taxpayers.

Work from home on a hybrid basis

There is also an option to work from home on a hybrid basis.  After a probationary training period this position can be eligible to work from home (telework) up to three days a week.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Review Error messages generated by the system and resolve errors on returns.

  • Review incomplete returns and communicate missing information to taxpayers

  • Review and analyze tax attributes, including net operating loss carryovers, charitable contribution.

  • Review calculation of penalties and interest for special situations

  • Review correspondence generated by system and explain letters to taxpayers

  • Locate and apply missing payments

  • Communicate with taxpayers, primarily in writing, but also by telephone, explaining assessments and adjustments, or  what is needed to bring incomplete returns into compliance as acceptably filed returns

  • Explain filing requirements to taxpayers

  • At the advanced level of the series, this position will provide mentoring to less experience Tax Technicians.

We are looking for an applicant with the following desired knowledge, skills and abilities and experience.

  • Demonstrated history of accuracy performing work where accuracy was important;

  • Attention to detail

  • Previous work experience in examination of licenses or the preparation, review or examination of tax returns, bookkeeping or accounting experience;

  • Strong mathematical skills and ability to understand tax computations;

  • Ability to research, understand and apply tax laws to tax returns;

  • Demonstrated work history using information systems such as a tax program, accounting program or similarly related programs.

  • Comfortable working in an open environment.  Currently the Juneau Corporation Tax section works in a very open environment where there is little individual privacy.

This flexibly staffed position provides an exciting opportunity for the successful applicant.  This vacancy may be filled at the 1, 2 or 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. Starting salary will be determined by the level at which the position is hired. If filled at Level 1/Level 2, promotion to the Level 2/Level 3 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.

Tax Technician 1

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  •        Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.

  •        Clerical: Knowledge of filing, typing, entering data, maintaining records, and using and completing forms.

  •        Computer Skills: Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.

  •        Oral Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

  •        Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

Full proficiency level clerical, bookkeeping, or accounting experience.

Tax Technician 2

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  • Arithmetic/Mathematical Reasoning: Performs computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division correctly; solves practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques such as formulas and percentages.

  • Computer Skills: Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.

  • Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

  • Oral Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

Entry level paraprofessional experience in the preparation, review, or examination of tax returns or the examination of license applications to ensure compliance with program regulations and guidelines.

Tax Technician 3

Progressively responsible paraprofessional experience in the preparation, review, or examination of tax returns, assisting taxation and/or revenue auditors ensure compliance with program regulations and guidelines or examination of license applications.

Flexible Staffing

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate's credibly possessed and proven competencies. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher level after completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.
