Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Tax Counsel located in San Ramon, CA through August 28 at 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time).

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide analysis, advice, and counsel with respect to U.S. state and local taxes (primary focus on U.S. state and local sales/use, excise and gross receipt taxes) impacting Chevron's business operations.

  • Develop and implement state and local tax planning projects.

  • Represent Chevron in state and local tax controversies, including preparing appeals, attending hearings, and negotiating settlements.

  • Stay current on and evaluate developing state and local tax legislation and regulations, including teaming with Chevron's policy, government and public affairs personnel to develop or respond to state and local tax law and regulatory changes.

  • Prepare state and local tax research and analysis to assist with Chevron's state and local tax compliance processes.

  • Provide timely and accurate advice on state and local tax matters to Chevron's business units.

  • Review, negotiate and manage services contracts with outside tax consulting firms.

  • Understand and assess all state and local tax return filing positions and potential ASC 450 impact.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree

  • State Bar admission.

  • Minimum of 7 years of state and local tax experience.

  • Excellent written and oral skills including the ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels of the organization, including the ability to communicate complex tax issues and options to senior executive financial and operating management allowing for effective decision making.

  • Solid leadership and interpersonal skills and experience in collaborating with Tax Compliance teams, auditors and business clients, irrespective of their locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years of state and local tax experience, preferably in a major corporation tax department.
  • LL.M. in Taxation

  • Relocation will be considered.

  • Expatriate assignments will not be considered.

JOB TITLE: Tax Compliance Manager DEPARTMENT: Tax JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the company's income tax compliance. Responsible for the preparation of Federal consolidated Form 1120, various combined and separate state forms, Forms 1118, 5471 and 8858 for the Company's affiliated entities. Responsible for managing country by country reporting, computing and tracking earnings & profits and foreign taxes. Stay abreast of new and relevant provisions under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act including managing the company's Subpart-F, GILTI, FDII and BEAT positions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Tax Compliance: * Prepare federal consolidated Form 1120 for the Company and Forms 1118, 5471s and 8858s for its foreign affiliates. * Prepare and/or review workpaper calculations supporting federal and state taxable income. * Prepare necessary disclosures resulting from acquisitions, dispositions or reorganizations. * Compile data for country-by-country reporting and prepare necessary forms. * Comply with new U.S. tax reform measures and establish a process for tracking and maintaining all relevant tax attributes. * Perform research to support positions taken in tax returns and prepare supporting documentation including technical memorandums. * Prepare the quarterly and annual tax provision related to foreign operations including the GILTI inclusion and the foreign tax credit calculation. * Coordinate with outside advisors to ensure timely filing of foreign local tax return filings for company's affiliated entities. * Coordinate with the tax accounting team to ensure efficient integration between tax accounting and tax compliance processes. * Prepare and/or review Forms 1042s and W8BEN-Es. Audit Defense: * Interface with IRS agents, coordinate, prepare and/or review responses to all Information Document Requests (IDRs) issued to the company. * Oversee maintenance of detailed logs of all IDR responses and other communications with the IRS. * Regularly participate in strategy discussions with tax counsel and economists and assist with all necessary internal data gathering and analysis. * Communicate with foreign controllers/managers to keep apprised of tax audits occurring outside the U.S. and provide support as needed. * Keep an updated list of current tax audits worldwide. Training: * Regularly attend technical issue seminars provided by professional firms. * Participate in on-line courses and review technical materials to keep up to date on tax and accounting pronouncements. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES * Intermediate knowledge of federal and multi-state income tax concepts. * Intermediate knowledge of U.S. international and foreign tax concepts, including hybrid entities, repatriation strategies, Subpart F income, global intangible low-taxed income and foreign tax credit. * Working knowledge of OneSource income tax software is required.
