Responsibilities

WHAT DOES AN ON-THE-JOB INSTRUCTOR (OJI) DO? As an On-the-Job Instructor you will be responsible for delivering on the On-the-job instruction/training to individuals from within your organization. As an OJI, you will use your technical expertise and years of experience to plan and conduct training on basic and/or advanced areas of tax law, procedures, policies, techniques, or other specialized fields unique to your position/occupation.

As an OJI you will be called upon to share knowledge and expertise with employees within your unit/organization in a one to one environment. You will perform these duties as a collateral duty assignment, with no change to your current position description or post of duty. As an OJI, you have the extraordinary opportunity of sharing you expertise and knowledge with others, while at the same time serving in a role that is of tremendous benefit to the Service as a whole!

As a Tax Specialist On-the Job Instructor (OJI) will:

  • Perform your regular duties and direct work, either phones and/ or

paper during non-training times. During the training assignment, if the OJI member is not

actively involved in the essential OJI duties, he/she will return to direct work activities when

not preparing, instructing, coaching and/or facilitating.

  • Coordinate as appropriate in delivering OJI instruction/training materials.

  • Analyze, write and review course material. Develop, plan, schedule, coordinate, and/or present basic, advanced, or specialized training material or instruction as assigned. Teach and/or provide instruction in recruit, basic, advanced, and specialized courses and technical knowledge, counsel others during the progress of the OJI to assist with problems and provide special guidance.

  • Coordinate with others who may be assigned on either a full time or part time basis for recruit, basic or advanced training as required. Assure that instructors or other coaches are informed of any changes in course or technical subject matter. Coordinate as appropriate on methods, techniques, training aids, and trainee management relative to assigned training or technical areas.

  • May also provide specialized OJI training to other OJI instructors, if appropriate.

  • Ensure familiarity with course materials, illustrative material, case studies, technical materials and OJI assignments accordingly. Ensure consistency in technical interpretation of regulations and their application. Recommend changes in emphasis, adjustment in the division of time spent in, discussion, workshop, or other elements of OJI training activities; also recommends necessary changes in other training needs and/or identified in OJI observation.

  • Evaluate and/or recommend whether trainees or others should be retained and/or need additional instruction; in addition, evaluates trainees' OJI progress and/or conduct.

May be assigned to various units within the Hampton Police Division. Examples of Duties * Patrols an assigned district within the City of Hampton using a patrol car or on foot to prevent crime or disturbance of peace and arrest violators. Familiarizes self with housing, businesses and persons within the district. Notices suspicious persons and unusual conditions and makes preliminary investigations. Examines premises of unoccupied buildings and checks doors and windows for security. Reports hazards that endanger public safety such as malfunctioning traffic signals, damaged utility structures, etc. * Acknowledges radio transmissions relaying citizens complaints and proceeds to location. Answers complaints from citizens such as domestic quarrels, fights, vandalism, etc., then takes necessary corrective action. Investigates missing persons and watches for runaways and truants. Watches for and makes recovery of lost and stolen property and vehicles. Disperses unruly crowds at public gatherings. Inspects public establishments requiring licenses and ensure compliance with relevant rules and regulations. * Serves warrants and summons. Arrests violators for misdemeanors and felonies. Accompanies prisoners to headquarters or jail, and makes report of events leading to and surrounding arrest. Confers with Commonwealth Attorney to coordinate courtroom testimony. Appears in court as arresting officer. * Investigates traffic accidents and renders first aid to injured. Directs and re routes traffic around accidents or other disruptions. Issues tickets to traffic violators. Checks abandoned vehicles and calls for tow truck. Provide, escort for funerals, parades and shipment of currency. Transports emergency blood vials from hospital to hospital. * Provides public with general information on laws, ordinances, and services of the City and State. Provides directions to lost persons and motorists. Renders aid to persons locked out of home or vehicle. Ascertains information from citizens to aid in investigation of crime. * May be assigned to various units within the Division including Crime Prevention, Training, Administration, Investigations, and Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Learns the purpose and operation of assigned unit. Assists senior officers in completion of unit's official duties and responsibilities. During an assigned shift, may maintain a limited caseload of investigations, as needed. * Performs other related duties as required. Typical Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school course of study or successful completion of a GED; college level course work in Police Science or related field of study preferred; ability to be courteous yet firm with the public; must be alert, and possess ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; good skills of observation and memory; excellent moral character; good physical condition. Must pass City physical examination, background investigation (to include polygraph examination), and physical agility examination; must be at least twenty (20) years of age at time of application. Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license and must have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Must be able to communicate the English language verbally as well as in writing. Supplemental Information Entry level position. Requires attendance at Police Academy and period of probationary status prior to permanent appointment. Upon successful completion of Police Training Academy and all certifications required by Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services incumbent shall be administratively upgraded to the position of Police Officer with an annual salary of $43,297.00 and shall receive a sign on bonus of $2000.00. Receives supervision through specific instructions and daily evaluations by a senior officer, usually a Corporal or Sergeant. This may involve an element of personal danger during the arrest of persons who violate city ordinances and state laws. May be rotated to other Patrol Officer positions within the Police Department.
