Department of Revenue is recruiting for multiple Tax Auditor 1 (TA1) positions. We are looking for talented, detail-oriented individuals to join our Personal Tax & Compliance Division in the Compliance Unit. This position is headquartered in our Bend office; however, the successful candidate may be eligible for in state hybrid work. Hybrid work consists of performing duties onsite in a standard office environment and working remotely. This position has an on-site requirement of 3 days a week. This could change depending on business need and training.

The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Tax Auditor 1 (TA1) level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the Tax Auditor Entry (TAE) to apply, as the department may consider underfilling the position.

What You Will Be Doing

Below is a sampling of job duties. It is not meant to encompass all duties.

  • Examines returns which have been determined to have met the section's operational plan.

  • Conducts in person, virtual, telephonic or correspondence audits to determine the appropriate adjustment of tax including business income and expenses reported on individual income tax returns by examination of the financial books and records, including tracing receipts and expenses and matching to and from source documents.

  • Develops pre‑audit analysis, identifies issues, and schedules the necessary appointments. Uses independent judgment to determine the scope and techniques of the audit; develops audit plans and performs sampling techniques in order to test the accounting system.

  • Obtains third party information through online sources, subpoena, public records, business practices and procedures, to establish a true financial picture of the taxpayer or a transaction.

This Is What You Need To Qualify

Tax Auditor 1 ($4536.00 - $6952.00)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

one year of work experience in tax preparation, auditing, tax audit defense, professional accounting, drafting rules or legislation, providing law training, or developing tax forms or instructions. This experience must have been in either Oregon income tax, corporate income/excise tax, gross receipts tax, sales and use tax, another state or city with a tax structure similar to Oregon, or Federal income tax; AND

one of the following:

a Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or any related field; or

24 quarter hours (16 semester hours) in accounting or finance including one class in technical writing and one class in Excel and two years of work experience doing either compliance work in a tax program or professional accounting.

  • Professional accounting experience must include at least two of the following: cash receipts, cash disbursements, cost accounting, journal entries, operation of a general ledger system and subsidiary accounts, posting and closing a full set of books, or preparation of a trial balance.

Tax Auditor/Entry ($3948.00 - $5483.00)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

a Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or any related field; OR

24 quarter hours (16 semester hours) in accounting or finance including one class in technical writing and one class in Excel and two years of experience doing either compliance work in a tax program or professional accounting.

  • Professional accounting experience must include at least two of the following: cash receipts, cash disbursements, cost accounting, journal entries, operation of a general ledger system and subsidiary accounts, posting and closing a full set of books, or preparation of a trial balance.

The ideal candidate will possess the following desired skills and attributes:

  • Proven ability to exhibit sound judgment and decision making when there are variables (i.e. interpreting laws/regulations).

  • Proven ability to speak and write professionally in a well-organized, straight forward and concise manner to taxpayers and tax professionals.

  • Proven ability to work cohesively within a team and/or independently with a track record of being a self-starter/self-manager.

  • Highly competent computer (including Microsoft Excel and Outlook).

  • To be able to maintain professional skills, annual new law update seminars and ongoing in-house training are required.

  • Knowledge of tax rules and regulations

  • The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect the additional 6.95%.
