Purpose of Job

Prepares Sales & Use tax returns for assigned Interstate-owned business and performs various support functions for the sales tax department.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns for multiple locations and file timely reports with the proper taxing authorities

  • Run monthly sales tax reports, compare to GL and work with IT to get correct reports

  • Import sales tax data into returns program and evaluate for correctness

  • Handle responses to taxing authorities' questions regarding filings

  • Prepare resale certificates and W-9s for suppliers

  • Update sales tax rates in manual billing systems

  • Coordinate business registrations and license renewals with legal department as necessary

  • Provide support for sales, use and property tax audits as necessary

  • Research tax issues raised internally within the department and externally from other departments within Interstate as directed by manager

  • Validation of proper sales & use tax treatment on purchases


  • College degree in accounting preferred.

  • Experience in a sales & use tax role (3+ years with a college degree, 6+ years without a college degree).

  • Prior experience must include preparing and filing sales & use tax returns in multiple states, validating resale certificates from customers and using sales tax return software.

  • Strong accounting skills including account reconciliations, journal entries and an understanding of financial reports and general ledger accounts.

  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, Word and Outlook;

  • Must be detail oriented, organized, highly accurate, and demonstrate the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet multiple deadlines.

  • Must be a self-starter with an ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment
