This position is responsible for offering risk assessments and needs screenings at all pretrial points in the criminal legal system. Tamarack/PTS Coordinators provide case management supports and services to those who are referred by the Defense Attorney, Prosecutor and the Court to provide pretrial intervention and case management supports and services. Coordinators work to rapidly connect people who are charged with a crime, and for whom the underlying cause of the criminal behavior is believed to be related to substance use and/or mental health needs, to treatment providers and other community-based services.

Pay Grade 16: $28.73 - $32.02 Hourly

  • Provide risk assessments and needs screenings in the correctional facility and in the court to those who are eligible as required following Pretrial Services policies and procedures

  • File with the court a report of risk screenings and needs assessments results so that the Prosecutor, the Defense, and the Court have access

  • Attend weekly arraignments and as needed other court hearings

  • Work with court-order and self-referred participants

  • Prioritize making referrals to substance use and mental health providers for responsible parties, and connect participants to other supportive services as soon as possible

  • When working with affected parties, act as primary liaison to communicate in reliable and time-sensitive ways, offering trauma-informed options for engagement.

  • Keep impacted parties informed regularly throughout Tamarack process to offer them voice and choice to best represent their needs

  • Coordinate participants' care as ordered by the Court, for at least 90 days

  • Communicate with the Prosecutor, the Defense and the Court as defined by Pretrial Services policies and procedures

  • Report to the court participant engagement to the Prosecutor every 30 days, at a minimum

  • Reach out to, and develop working relationships with organizations who support the different identities living within Chittenden County, providing information about services, the need for volunteers, and paid cultural advocates

  • Communicate with treatment and service providers to deliver rapid and seamless, supportive case management to participants

  • Collect, enter and share data as required by Pretrial Services

  • Provide trauma-informed, culturally literate responses to the range of experiences participants impacted by and responsible for harm have lived, determining each time what identities need to be present to support the conversation and/or process/

  •  Stay current in practical knowledge of the theories, practices, and methodologies in the fields of restorative and transformative justice, trauma-informed care, leveling power dynamics and all matters related to equity, justice and inclusion

Other:

  • Ask who is not "at the table" and build in time to prioritize the voices that, historically, are not heard, centered or prioritized. Prioritize equity and work to identify and design for equity

  • Supervise or co-supervise any interns serving with the program, this includes designing internship, monitoring their work and case-load and holding regularly scheduled check-ins.

  • Maintain records of services and deliver evaluations and service reports on time

  • Act as an "Ambassador" for the City, carry out work and interact with co-workers and the public in professionally and respectfully.

  • Share caseload of Youth Substance Abuse Safety Program (YSASP), Driving with License Suspended (DLS) and Court Diversion cases as needed

  • Attend monthly CEDO and CJC staff meetings

  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Ability to actively support, and work skillfully with people from all cultures and with those whose identities differ from your own.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by trainings and professional development both at the individual and organizational levels.

  • Associate's degree in education, criminal justice or human services or related field and two years related work experience or four years work experience in a human services (social work, community mental health, substance use work) related field.

  • Training, education, course work in the areas of substance abuse, mental health, domestic and sexual violence, trauma, poverty, crime and other challenges.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Knowledge of community resources and the ability to make appropriate referrals

  • Strong attention to detail, time management, record-keeping and computer skills

  • Well-developed sense of professional and personal boundaries

  • Regular in-person attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.

  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.

  • High level of comfort working with those responsible for serious and violent crimes

  • Ability to understand and demonstrate knowledge of community impact of crime and victim issues

  • High standards of confidentiality, attention to detail, record keeping and follow through required.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational, coordination and group leadership skills.

  • Basic working knowledge of the criminal legal system

  • Believes in and values a restorative response to crime and conflict

  • Explains information in a straightforward manner and varies language and communication style to meet the needs of the recipient; communicates skillfully on phone, in person, and in writing.

  • Remains calm in the presence of strong emotions from others while creating an atmosphere for problem solving

  • Ability to work in a team environment, while also working independently as necessary.

  • Computer literacy necessary. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, and Excel preferred

  • Lived experiences in fields of substance use disorder, mental health challenges and/or the criminal legal system are a plus
