Systems Engineer

This product focused position performs established technical tasksat the product and cross-business integration level for current and futureproducts within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves workacross many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centerednature of this position, they are very often a central point of coordinationand decision making between product engineers, product line engineers, customerteams, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.

  • Investigatesproduct problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action,owns problem resolution and documents results with guidance from moreexperienced team members.

  • Mainfocus will include working in business processes of PPT, VPI or CPS andexecuting technical processes such as ESW, iDFMEA, FIRG while using tools suchas 7-step problem solving, design review checklist and other specialized toolsrequired to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.

  • Obtainsinput from stakeholders such as technical managers, project leaders, otherproduct and manufacturing engineers and supplier partners to deliverinformation and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.

  • Appliesacademic knowledge and existing experience to take action and make decisionsthat progress projects forward without sacrificing project qualityexpectations. Examples of these decisions include day to day project details,analysis or test work instruction details, coordination across disciplineareas, etc. that are necessary to make quality progress.

  • Ownsproblem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems,subsystems or services with a greater degree of technical complexity andambiguity over the entry level engineer level and with greater accountabilityto the project team.

  • Providesindependent execution of established work processes and systems, while stilldeveloping technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement ofsystems and processes.

  • Involvesminimal direct management of people, but could involve the coordination anddirection of work amongst technicians and/or temporary student employees.

  • Contributeseffectively toward team goals, exhibits influence within a work groupand continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical tosuccess in the role.

Cummins Internship program criteria:

  • Must be a full-time enrolled student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred

  • Must be able to complete a minimum of 10 weeks and up to a maximum of 12 week commitment

  • Must be able to complete 40 hours per week

  • Willingness to learn from others on the job

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary ratecommensurate with experience.
