Overview

General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) is seeking motivated systems engineers to support submarine design and integration programs including VIRGINIA Class, COLUMBIA Class, payload integration efforts, and the next generation fast-attack submarine. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: leading and supporting technical integration projects, developing and managing technical requirements, supporting cross-functional interface development activities, and managing technical risk identification and mitigation efforts. Our department works closely with other internal engineering disciplines, with various Navy organizations, and with industry partners to ensure successful integration of complex systems within the submarine.

In supporting the above scope of work, selected candidates will be expected to lead or support a variety of tasks related to technical integration and the application of system engineering tenets.

Some examples of current opportunities include:

  • Supporting integration of submarine design upgrades

  • Future payload integration studies

  • Integrated test plan development for prototypical submarine and payload delivery systems

  • Development of model based system engineering (MBSE) models using tools such as Cameo

  • Development and management of technical shipbuilder requirements for multiple engineering disciplines using tools such as DOORS

Assignments and responsibilities will be based on the selected applicants experience levels, skill sets, and ambitions, as well as on the evolving needs of each project. Some assignments may provide occasional travel opportunities to customer and industry partner locations including Washington D.C., Colorado, and California.

GDEB offers the ability to work from home part-time. There will be opportunities for employment rotations within the company.

Responsibilities

Strong writing and communication skills are required. A willingness to work as part of a team and independently in fast paced, evolving, and technically challenging environments is necessary.

Prior experience in submarine design, serving onboard submarines, or in related environments is desired. Experience working in a systems engineering environment is also desired.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Science in an Engineering field is required. A Bachelor or Master Degree in Systems Engineer is desired.

The core focus of this group is electric drive propulsion control component integration, development, test, and delivery to meet the growing need of the United States Navy for more capable and more affordable submarines. A large part of developing and integrating such systems is the analysis and design of robust, high-performance control systems as well as the evaluation, disposition, and management of sub-tier supplier products that results in the delivery of the physical control systems. The IPS Main Propulsion Control System team is unique in that it has and develops specific resources with experience in the fields of linear and non-linear system theory, multivariable control analysis and design, advanced power electronics, and electric machinery and drives. The position of an electrical systems engineer in the Main Propulsion System Control group would include projects and tasks centered around topics such as the design and analysis feedback control systems, time and frequency-domain stability analysis of power and electromechanical systems, as well as the acquisition and processing of test facility data using spectral analysis tools and advanced digital signal processing techniques for the purposes of model validation and data-driven control design. This is a highly technical role requiring both sufficient theoretical/academic knowledge in the disciplines of control systems and digital signal processing. Additional responsibilities include mathematical and computer modeling of linear and non-linear power and electromechanical systems for system performance and stability predictions, review and disposition of vendor engineering products, support of vendor test data analysis results as well as component testing and troubleshooting. Responsibilities: include the design, development, and analysis of submarine propulsion control systems and the integration of these control system with electro-mechanical machinery. These responsibilities support submarine system and component performance and the overall capability of the platform to achieve its mission. Additional responsibilities include mathematical and computer analysis of advanced power electronics, linear and non-linear systems and power systems for performance problem resolution, review and disposition of vendor engineering products, support of vendor test data analysis results as well as component testing and troubleshooting related to the delivery of submarine propulsion control systems. Duties will also include support testing of hardware in land based and at sea demonstrations. Below is a further breakdown of responsibilities for this role: * Practical experience with system identification and data-driven control * Familiarity with advance power converter topologies and control schemes * Analyzing and interpreting simulation results via MATLAB and similar tools to generate analysis reports, calculation packages, and formal recommendation letters to our customers * Validating test data and results following system test * Developing and verifying system-level and component level requirements * Integration of electrical and control systems in accordance with Military and Industrial standards and specifications for hardware and software * Development and review of electrical system integration products such as signal databases, electrical schematics and diagrams * Reviewing vendor technical analysis reports and Electric Boat generated reports, and review of component specifications and deliverables * Review and disposition of electric drive vendor information requests, requirements clarifications, control system design deliverables and testing reports * Familiarity with various electric machinery and drive systems (induction motors, permanent magnet machines, generators, etc.) * Travel to the vendor facilities in Danbury, CT and Milwaukee, WI for test witnessing, model design and analysis review, program reviews * Travel to Philadelphia, PA to support full-scale testing of the electric drive control system Candidates best suited for this position will possess a passion for learning and being taught in the principles of operation of control systems, power electronics systems, motors, generators, and electric drives while assisting in the management of sub-tier suppliers in the delivery of the same equipment for ship construction.
