Systems Engineer

SP Industries is seeking a Systems Engineer with a background in integrating Mechanical, Controls, and Electrical technologies with an emphasis on Control Systems for capital equipment. The ideal Systems Engineer will be able to research, plan, design, and integrate Mechanical, Control, and Electrical systems into a reliable, efficient, cost effective for low-temperature refrigeration package and automated vial movement systems, and direct and coordinate the fabrication, installation, operation, and repair of these systems.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Research and analyze data such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine design feasibility or application.

  • Integration is paramount: Must have the ability to integrate mechanical, electrical, and controls systems into complex equipment structures which meets customers' requirements.

  • Design products or systems with consideration for cost, performance, materials, ease of maintenance, appearance, and adherence to customer specifications.

  • Oversee all aspects of the design, development, construction and testing processes.

  • Operate cross functionally in a matrix environment -customers, sales, R&D, manufacturing, et cetera.

  • Conduct research into the function and application of different types of mechanical components and material assembly techniques.

  • Explore various possible machine configurations and aid in selecting the optimum design for meeting the customer's processing objectives.

  • Build and execute the necessary models to predict performance.

  • Specify appropriate materials and components to ensure the standards of performance, quality, cost and safety are met.

  • Assist in supplier selection and in the evaluation of incoming materials.

  • Provide manufacturing support, troubleshooting and continuous improvement of assigned processes.

  • Serve as a technical resource to other departments to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design standards and customer specifications.

  • Direct activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.

  • Use computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.

  • Make engineering changes and improvements within the CAD environment and process engineering change requests in a timely manner.

  • Convert customer requirements into design features into system applications.

  • Participate in design reviews with design team members and read and interpret technical materials.

  • Provide product support on the manufacturing floor.

  • Some travel may be required.

Qualifications:
Education, Experience, Skills, and Certifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual should possess the minimum qualifications cited.

Education, Experience, and Work Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related field from a four-year college or university.

  • Master's degree preferred.

  • PE license preferred.

  • EPA Universal Refrigeration Card a plus.

  • EPA or Refrigeration Certificate a plus.

  • HVAC certification a plus.

  • Refrigeration experience with R404A, R507A, LN2.

  • Heat transfer loop experience from

  • 70 C to +70 C preferred.
  • Experience with both direct expansion and flooded refrigeration designs preferred.

  • Work experience within an FDA compliant or ISO quality environment preferred.

  • Work experience in an Engineer-To-Order environment is a plus.

  • Work experience with vacuum systems down to 5 microns is a plus.

  • Must have good structured problem solving skills.

  • Must have good analytical skills.

  • The shop is heated when required but many areas are not air conditioned.

Some shop processes use high voltage arcs or concentrated magnetic fields.

Assigned tasks will be within the Electrical and Controls Engineering disciplines and include training on and supporting the equipment, devices, and services provided by SP Scientific. Essential Duties And Responsibilities: Develop, test, troubleshoot, modify, and commission Allen Bradley PLC (ControlLogix) control system applications using RSLogix. * Develop, test, troubleshoot, modify, and commission SCADA and GE Proficy HMI/SCADA (iFIX) control system applications. * Specify and purchase control system hardware and instrumentation. * Read, understand, develop, and modify control system design documents including diagrams, drawings (P&ID, control system schematics, wiring drawings, I/O lists, pneumatic and hydraulic drawings, etc.) and written design specifications (Functional Specifications, Users Manuals, Sequence of Operations, etc.). * Produce GAMP documentation including, but not limited to, Functional Specifications (FS), Hardware Design Specifications (HDS), and Software Design Specifications (SDS) as required by project specifications. * Develop, modify, and configure PC based relational databases. * Develop and install control systems in a cost effective and timely manner in accordance with project schedules, budgets, customer requirements, and equipment specifications. * Report on and/or present progress and status of projects and assignments in various formats to internal and external audiences. * Perform value analysis and sustaining engineering tasks, and product improvement designs to enhance manufacturability, productivity, reliability, safety, quality, and cost effectiveness. * Provide assistance to Technical Support and Service personnel. * Some travel to other SP facilities, vendors, or customer sites may be necessary. Some travel may be foreign. Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Skills * A 4-year Technical Degree; A BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science is preferred. * 1-5 years minimum Engineering experience. * Experienced and proficient with SCADA software and HMI software such as Wonderware, GE iFix, or FactoryTalk View. * Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software systems such as AutoCAD or Solidworks is required. * Computer skills to include Microsoft Office products- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project. * Experience with capital equipment or engineered-to-order products is required. * Experience with validation procedures and change-control practices relating to control system development and modification is a plus. * Experience with controls validation and change-control procedures within an FDA regulated environment is a plus. * Experience with computer-based Bills of Material and Inventory Control processes and MRP is a plus. * Experience with a Quality Management System based on the ISO-9001:2008 standard is a plus. * Experience with systems integration involving multiple vendors is a plus. * Experience with refrigeration systems control is a plus. * Experience designing, troubleshooting IP networks * Experience setting up PCs, Servers and Thin Clients (Windows XP through 10 and Server 2003 through 2012 R2) * Experience with ADS, DNS and RDS in server 2008 and / or server 2012 * Must have good troubleshooting skills. * Must have excellent organizational skills. * Must have excellent communication skills; must be able to communicate clearly and succinctly when speaking and writing.
