Systems Engineer, Hydrogen

Status: Exempt (salaried)

Position Summary

The Systems Engineer, Hydrogen is responsible to lead Plug Power's development, operation, and continual improvement of hydrogen fueling infrastructure at both customer and company owned locations. This position will primarily work with the internal Plug Power hydrogen systems team, hydrogen engineering team, construction team, and service team in addition to external vender's engineering staff to ensure the corporate refueling offering is a thoroughly vetted product with continuous operation. The ideal candidate should possess a background in chemical, process, or industrial engineering and must be willing to travel to deployment locations when required to assist in unique commissioning or complex troubleshooting efforts; up to 25% of the time.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of all Plug Power products' designs and functionality

  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert for hydrogen generation, compression, storage, and dispensing systems

  • Develop Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, perform Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, and specify critical balance of plant components for hydrogen generating, compressing, storing, and dispensing systems

  • Develop and lead projects for equipment cost reduction and efficiency improvement

  • Act as Responsible Engineer and coordinate/collaborate with internal personnel for testing and deployments of new or modified technology; be proactive in alignment of efforts to achieve project deadlines

  • Interface with vendors as necessary to vet their offering, gain critical information for troubleshooting, or implement improvements

  • Provide guidance and technical expertise to component and automation engineers as to how overall system and individual equipment is meant to operate

  • Provide expertise to assist the construction management team with drawing development and permitting as needed

  • Review operational data and construction/assembly drawings to assist in complex troubleshooting efforts with field service personnel

  • Represent Plug Power in a professional manner at all times and in all interactions.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • BS degree in chemical, process, industrial, or mechanical engineering

  • A minimum of three (3) years working experience in process/chemical plant environment

  • E.I.T. certificate or P.E. license highly preferred

  • Ability to travel occasionally; up to 25% of the time

  • To deployment sites for infrastructure commissioning or troubleshooting

  • To meeting with venders and verify equipment operation

  • Experience in any of the following spheres of activity is preferred and highly valued:

  • Hydrogen and/or fuel cells

  • Cryogenic Industry

  • High Pressure Systems (250 Bar and up)

  • Gas processing and/or dispensing equipment

  • Oil and Gas, CNG, LNG, etc

  • Logistics/Material Handling

  • Possess computer/software skills as applicable to the position including but not limited to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Project, and Visio

  • Driven and self-motivated with excellent follow-through.

  • Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task effectively

  • Ability to role model high standards of professionalism with an uncompromising dedication to quality design & documentation and operational safety

  • Demonstrate analytical abilities with strong attention to detail

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Dynamic interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences

This role requires close interaction with the systems, mechanical, controls, manufacturing, and construction teams to ensure developing design efforts are coordinated with active implementations. The role also requires close interaction with the supply chain, quality, manufacturing and service teams to ensure designs meet cross functional requirements as well as relevant codes & standards. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, able to handle multiple assignments and willing to learn and adapt in a fast-paced product engineering organization. Core Duties and Responsibilities * Develop electrical system requirements, electrical schematics, harness drawings, 1 line drawings, field wiring diagrams and electrical component specifications. * Determine electrical requirements for motors, VFD's, sensors and instrumentation. * Create accurate, complete and concise engineering documentation. * Perform engineering analysis to define critical design parameters and develop test plans as necessary to optimize designs * Develop statistically based test plans to optimize designs and verify design latitude. * Perform root cause analysis of issues found in the field. * Write clear test plans and document results that can verify engineering analysis and drive fact based decisions. * Coordinate and lead design changes through the enterprise change process. * Must be able to clearly communicate ideas and issues in both written and verbal form. * Strong problem solving skills and ability to identify and correct problem root cause. * Strong teamwork a must. * Represent Plug Power in a professional manner in all interactions; support the philosophy of the organization to provide high-performing technology to maximize customer satisfaction. * Flexible and adaptable to changes in requirements, priorities and schedules. * Some travel required to support supplier qualification and equipment commissioning. Education and Experience * Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. * Three plus years relevant experience work experience. * Experience with electric codes (NEC, UL, NFPA, IEC) preferred. * Experience with hazardous area equipment and codes (NEC, ATEX, etc.) preferred. * Experience with specifying high voltage equipment preferred * Experience with specifying and troubleshooting controls hardware preferred. * Experience reading Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID's) preferred. * Must be capable of working independently, in a fast-paced environment, with minimal supervision. * Demonstrated analytical abilities with strong attention to detail. * Superior communication skills. * Ability to manage projects and multi-task effectively. * Ability to role model high standards of professionalism. * Excellent follow-through. * Must be driven and self-motivated. * Must possess the highest ethical standards and a supreme commitment to quality.
