You are a proven leader among your peers, known as the "go-to" person for questions on new technologies or during business crisis situations, all in a dynamic environment. You have a good mix of technical and "soft" skills which makes you a key resource for global enterprise projects. Working directly with business customers, you identify their needs and requirements, so that you can create successful technical solutions for them. You tear-down silos between teems, promoting open and free communication between your peers and those in different groups. As the ideal candidate, you have over 5 years of progressive working experience, building and supporting enterprise-class technical solutions. A passion for photography is a plus!

Your Next Challenge:

  • Build, maintain, and tune server infrastructure (primarily Windows, but also Linux), both physical and virtual (VMware, Hyper-v, AWS EC2).

  • Build AWS Infrastructure-As-Code (Terraform).

  • Configure and administer a wide array of on-premise, IaaS, and SaaS-based enterprise solutions, such as Commvault backups, FTP, MFA, and many others.

  • Automate common or complex tasks via scripting (PowerShell, Python, BASH, etc.)

  • Gather requirements, evaluate, present, implement, integrate, and document solutions for new business initiatives.

  • Maintain the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and monitoring configuration for team-owned systems and services

  • Maintain technical competency through self-guided study, structured training and attendance at technical seminars and forums.

  • Collaborate, mentor and train other teams as appropriate on new solutions or systems.

  • Create, maintain and document standards for hardware, operating systems and applications.

  • Participate and evangelize process & procedural improvement initiatives.

  • Participate in the on-call rotation to provide support and troubleshooting assistance 24x7.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or similar, relevant technical certification or related professional work experience.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in Windows systems operations and support.

  • Fundamental knowledge of Active Directory, Exchange, DNS, PKI, FTP.

  • Familiar with cloud-computing concepts and practices (AWS).

  • Methodical and insightful troubleshooting skills.

  • Excellent customer service & interpersonal skills.

  • Strong written and oral communications, including the ability to express complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Motivated self-starter, reliable, dedicated, scheduling flexibility.

The Senior Computer Specialist is responsible for providing systems design, development, operational support, and consulting for virtual labs and virtual learning technologies over their lifecycles. They will plan and design infrastructure including hardware and software recommendations. Additionally, they will provide Tier 2 Helpdesk support for virtual labs and associated technologies. This position will meet with academic staff to gather requirements, provide analysis, and develop virtual labs deployment strategies. Providing training for academic and instructional staff will be the responsibility of this position. They will configure, support, and test virtual labs for student course work. They will collaborate with instructional staff to support their use of technology in delivery of curricula through a variety of instructional methods. This role will create learning resources for teachers, staff and students, as well as develop new solutions to meet emerging needs. They will meet with the senior director of technology and data services to manage budgets, strategy, vendor contracts, and other areas as needed. RESPONSIBILITIES: Virtual Labs Technologies * Designs system and network architecture for virtual technologies. * Provides QA and build production environments for teaching. * Evaluates, maintains and improves existing deployments. * Provides technical support for virtual labs technologies to Instructors and Instructional designers. * Creates and maintains user documentation related to virtual technologies for instructional staff and Tier 1 IT support. * Provides training for instructional staff in use of virtual technologies for delivering course content. * Assists in course design to Instructors, Instructional Designers, and Program Managers by providing information around virtual lab resource restrictions, deployment deadlines, cost-benefit analysis, feature feasibility, and deployment strategies. Build, configure, and maintain computer systems * Gather requirements, perform research, provide development, and testing of new systems or system upgrades. * Build physical and virtual systems using standard build processes. * Create new environments as assigned. * Keep systems up-to-date with appropriate patches, firmware, and other fixes. * Schedule necessary maintenance for systems, plan for downtime, and notify affected users if applicable. * Provide systems administration for internally managed, on premise systems as needed. Provide Helpdesk Support * Provide Tier 2 Helpdesk support for virtual labs and other learning technologies used in the delivery of online course content including Azure, AWS, Appsembler, Vocareum, etc. * Provide Tier 2 Helpdesk support for internally managed, on premise systems. REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent, and at least 3 years' experience in desktop support and system administration to include: * Experience supporting and maintaining Windows and Mac computers * Knowledge of and ability to set up and configure server hardware * Knowledge of learning technologies (e.g. Open Ed X, Canvas, etc.) * Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word, Excel * Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills including outstanding customer service experience and documentation of technical processes and procedures; ability to communicate technical information effectively with non-technical staff * Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and interact courteously with clients Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED EXPERIENCE * Demonstrated experience with Active Directory, DNS, and TCP/IP networking. * Hands on experience in networking, routing, and switching. * Demonstrated experience working in a help desk environment, providing support over email and phone to a university community. * Experience with troubleshooting hi-level production printers with multiple queues. * Experience with set-up, configuration, maintenance and upgrades to department computers, printers, and networks. * Experience with automation and scripting. * Demonstrated experience with virtual environments (e.g. VMWare, etc.). * Demonstrated experience using cloud-hosted solutions (e.g. Azure, Amazon Web Services, etc.).
