JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Web Applications Team in Infrastructure, a unit of Penn State Information Technology (IT), is looking for a highly motivated and specialized System Design Specialist with a passion for providing professional customer service and operational excellence. The ideal candidate will work as a member of our Web Applications team in support of University-wide systems and services.

Responsibilities include the design, integration, implementation, configuration, deployment and administration of highly available web application software systems and clustered deployments; design for performance, scale, and high availability; perform performance testing; implement the latest IT and security best practices for modern infrastructure and software management (e.g., Infrastructure as Code, DevOps, GitOps, containerization, Kubernetes); collaborate with the virtualization team to design, build and improve current technologies, and implement new virtualization technologies; provide systems integration expertise during the design/development phase to integrate cloud platforms; automate routine and repetitive tasks to streamline operations and create efficiencies.

This position is based out of University Park, Pennsylvania and offers the flexibility to work remotely up to three days per week. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience.

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

Knowledge of multiple cloud platforms (e.g. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform) is desired.

Knowledge and experience of managed container orchestration services ( e.g. Amazon EKS, Microsoft AKS, Google GKE) is desired.

The required knowledge, skills and behaviors for this position include: collaborating with and supporting peer team members; strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical documentation for peers, knowledge base, and training; be proactive in providing superior customer service to groups that depend on the systems; have a strong desire to analyze/diagnose problems, be flexible, and maintain critical thinking abilities under pressure; possess strong time-management and organizational skills; have experience working with Python, Perl, Bash, or other scripting languages; and have experience with production systems administration on Linux-based platforms.
