Primary Function

Uses company tools and operating protocols to design and develop building automation, fire alarm and/or security systems in new and existing facilities. Focuses on providing the most cost-effective solutions to meet project specifications whether acting as the lead or assisting a team

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Works with the sales team to understand project specifications and needs of the customer and may participate in job site walk- throughs.

Designs general systems for facilities which, depending on the system type, may include mechanical system layouts, electrical drawings, valve and damper schedules, fire alarm detection and notification layout, various security system devices, readers, etc., and control panel layouts.

Interprets/designs sequences of operations to identify hardware and logic requirements for systems.

Modifies sequences as required.

Analyzes plans, construction contract specifications and codes to determine project requirements and risks.

Assists Engineering Seniors with product selection.

Performs Quality Assurance of material selection and suitability.

Makes recommendations related to productivity improvement and cost reduction to increase customer satisfaction and increase profitability of jobs.

Follows up with sales and management to ensure job scope, specifications and schematics meet customer needs.

Provides start-up and checkout documentation to the Project Manager for more complex projects used in commissioning and validation.

Participates in sales to operations turnover meetings to evaluate accuracy of sales estimates and job layouts.

Performs peer review of engineering documents.

Mentors, trains and directs design activities of Design Engineers and Assistants.

Preferred Education & Experience

Minimum of Associates Degree in business related technology, e.g., mechanical or electrical design or engineering, or related field/equivalent experience. Bachelors degree preferred.
2-5 years of successful experience in engineering/systems with demonstrated competence in principal duties.

EIT, ASHRE, NICET or CISSP certifications are a plus.

Good knowledge of engineering fundamentals, HVAC, mechanical systems, fire or security system, and business operations required.

Able to read/interpret electrical circuit diagrams.

Strong Knowledge of Microsoft Office, AutoCAD.

Good influencing skills with the ability to negotiate and communicate at several levels of the organization.

Good relationship building skills; ability to interpret customer requirements, identify needs and resolve issues in a positive manner.

Ability to adapt to shifting demands and competing priorities from customers and internal partners to consistently manage time effectively and meet established deadlines.

If so, then we'd like to meet you! Responsibilities: Coordinates with contractors in the process of installation of systems sold by a branch office. Monitors and controls installation progress based on project schedules and milestones to deliverable timelines. Reports daily on activities completed, deferred, or requiring further action or material. Performs system commissioning on systems including loading software programs and implementing modifications as necessary. Can address code compliance issues in field as needed. Responds to and carries out to completion any troubleshooting to assigned customer systems during the installation phase of the system. Ensures company-owned test equipment and installation equipment is in proper working order. Uses company provides tools for process efficiency. Returns equipment in need of repair or calibration to the office in a timely manner. Makes recommendations regarding systems during installations. Fill out and complete Alabama and NFPA system commissioning forms including Asbuilts. Backup all system programs into a secure network resource. Required Knowledge/Skills, Education and Experience: Required education: High school diploma, state-recognized GED, or state-recognized high school proficiency. Required experience: Up to 2 years' experience with either the installation and / or maintenance of fire safety systems.. Required travel: 10% Other requirements: Alabama state Fire Alarm License (FAL) NICET II Fire Alarm Certification within 24mo of hire (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology) Strong customer service skills. Good verbal and written communications skills in English. Ability to read and understand design and construction documents. Skilled in the PC applications and in the use of word processing and spreadsheet programs. Ability to work in a variety of circumstances including climbing ladders, scaffolds and high-lift equipment as well as working in ducts, crawl spaces, and above ceilings. Must be able to differentiate types/colors of wire. Must be able to use hand-tools. Must be able to carry and move equipment and tools weighing up to 75 pounds unassisted.
