VIEW JOBS 12/12/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-03-12T00:00 This position resides with the VCU School of Medicine Technology Services (SOMTech) group and will be responsible for engineering custom hardware/software solutions and providing recommendations to support the Academic Research enterprise; research cores, research infrastructure and its associated laboratories. The Linux Systems Analyst will be responsible for documenting the interfaces, software and technical specifications for specialized research lab instruments, devices/equipment and their usage with desktop terminals. Will collaborate closely with the Helpdesk, Infrastructure and Security teams to deploy custom solutions to manage these proprietary and vendor-supported devices. The Linux Systems Analyst is a technical specialist in middleware, and serves as the technical lead for all matters concerning integration with other SOM and University systems, including ensuring proper documentation is made for each system change requested and that adequate change control, rigorous testing and training is done prior to moving changes into production. In addition, this position will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for supporting research IT in the academic medicine space, including assimilating new middleware technologies; business self-service, measuring and monitoring the performance and reliability of applications to achieve superior customer satisfaction. General duties include: * Provide technical support and expertise for hardware/software related issues in an academic medicine research-intensive environment with Linux-based machines. Windows and Macintosh support experience is also strongly desired. * Perform Linux installations, RPM, troubleshooting, maintenance, break-fix support and associated IT services such as backup and disaster recovery while working closely with researchers and specialized laboratory equipment. Linux distros include: Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat, CentOS, openSUSE, Fedora. * Create secure, virtualized and/or containerized experiences for research lab personnel using technologies such as LXC, KVM, VMWare, Kubernetes, Docker, Rkt, OpenStack Cloud, etc. * Use bash, shell scripting and/or python to build scripted automation tools to support the infrastructure and operations. * Design and develop creative hardware or software middleware products/solutions to extract, transfer and store laboratory instrument data in a centralized repository; enforce data management/lifecycle policies. * Participate in discussions with Principal Investigators (PIs), research lab technicians, graduate students, and other associated research faculty/staff personnel on the purchase of new equipment, its technical implementation and risk mitigation. * Communicate, advise, and provide statuses on SOM research lab activities to SOMTech management and Project Managers to ensure that security/compliance policies are being adhered to and consistent reporting is available for all internal and external stakeholders. * Use independent judgment and act as consultant on critical operations that impact long term organizational goals and objectives. * Contribute to overall laboratory Disaster Recovery and lab migration plans and procedures. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or related field and four (4) to ten (10) years of related experience or equivalent combination of related education and experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exemplary IT knowledge in systems testing, deployment, operations, documentation, standards, best practices, security, hardware, networking, OS, DBMS, middleware, etc. * Excellent knowledge of Linux/UNIX including bash scripting experience is required * Ability to quickly analyze complex technical environments, summarize status-quo, and perform gap analysis with resolution proposals * Strong interpersonal skills and persistent mindset, committed to efficiently communicate within the team and stakeholders is required * Willingness to continuously learn and improve on new technologies and procedures * Excellent verbal and written communication Preferred Qualifications Special Requirements State Of Virginia Richmond VA
