The System Administrator (SA) is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. This individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, are compliant, and up to date.

This individual will provide relevant 2nd to 3rd level support and troubleshooting for desktop and remote location technology issues.


  • Installs new/rebuild existing servers and configures hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements in a VM environment.

  • Develops and maintains installation and configuration procedures.

  • Contributes to and maintains system standards.

  • Researches and recommends innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system

administration tasks. Identifies approaches that leverage our resources and provides economies of scale.

  • Performs daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.

  • Performs daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.

  • Creates, changes, and deletes user accounts per request following established Change Control processes.

  • Provides support per request from various constituencies. Investigates and troubleshoots issues.

  • Repairs and recovers from hardware or software failures. Coordinates and communicates with impacted constituencies.

  • Applies OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrades administrative tools and utilities. Configures/adds new services as necessary.

  • Performs periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.

  • Performs ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as


  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to handle multiple priorities, meet demanding deadlines, adjust to sudden changes in workflow, and maintain high quality standards.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from user groups of various disciplines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage others and establish rapport.

  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to think independently, take initiative, think resourcefully, take corrective action and resolve inquiries.

  • Ability to work independently or semi-independently with minimum guidance or direction.


  • Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B.S.) in Business, Computer Science, or Information Technology, from four-year college or university preferred

  • System Administration/System Engineer certification in Microsoft preferred


  • Six to eight years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 3+ years administering VMWare 6/6.5

  • 2+ years administering Microsoft Exchange 2013/2016

  • 4+ years administering Windows 2012R2 and up, Active Directory, and Server experience

  • 3+ years administering storage and backups

  • PowerShell scripting

  • Solid grasp of LAN/WAN concepts, with experience in switch/wireless configurations a plus

  • Linux/Unix/Mac experience desired

  • Office 365/Azure administration and or migration a bonus

Candidates must possess strong problem-solving, analytical and communication skills, in addition to in-depth technical knowledge of the Governments systems hardware and software. Candidate requirements vary depending on system complexity, the types of operating and network systems being supported, and the size of the organization. A background in the specific types of hardware and software systems used by the Government is required. Candidates monitor and control one or more mid-range application servers. The SA studies program operating instructions to determine equipment setup and operations. The SA continuously observes the operation of assigned applications and storage devices to monitor system operation and determines the point of hardware or software failure. The SA manipulates systems in accordance with standard procedures to continue operations when individual units of a system malfunction.
