Summary of Position:#The System Manager of Inpatient Coding, is responsible for managing business operations for Inpatient facility coding at the Health System Level.

Accountable for the medical coding team who identifies all diagnoses and procedures on records, applying them to patient billing claims.

The manager provides guidance and direction to the leadership team on staffing issues. Develops policies and procedures within medical coding and manages their modifications and storage.

Responsible for staff compliance with all hospital policies, including HIPAA, remote work, medical coding quality and production, employee health, and annual education requirements.

Implements corrective action as necessary for staff who do not meet hospital or departmental policies. Coordinates staffing issues and procedural issues with the Director of Medical Coding Operations.

Accepts responsibility and accountability for operations of assigned functional areas in the Director#s absence.

Responsible for annual performance reviews. Verification and approval of timecards. Actively participates in process improvement projects, identifies as a change leader, and coaches staff professionally and by example.


Primary Job Responsibilities:


Responsible for the timely completion of medical coding. Responsible for coding key performance indicators such as coding turn around time and the discharge not final coded. Key performance indicators are subject to change as different initiatives begin and opportunities for improvement in processes arise. # Responsible for communicating both verbally and in writing to physicians, clinical departments, medical coders, and management teams throughout the organization.# Responds to inquiries from staff, vendors, and other customers for the purpose of providing information and/or direction, discussing and resolving any issues and/or problems. Works in conjunction with external departments to streamline processes and improve timely completion of coding. Attending both internal and external meetings requiring active participation and engagement. Communicates with management when trends or concerns are identified. Supervisory Responsibilities:# Oversees facility inpatient medical coding at the Albany Med, Glens Falls, Saratoga, and Columbia campuses. Manages through the supervision team, providing guidance on leadership techniques. Trains, provides feedback, evaluates, and provides corrective action to staff as needed. Responsible for the Discharge Not Final Coded for inpatient coding across all AMHS hospital campuses. Monitors staff compliance to all policies and procedures. In coordination with the Director of Medical Coding and through the supervision team, evaluates staff performance on an annual basis.

Accurately measures and evaluates staff performance, productivity, and quality measures, and assures that staff is following and meeting departmental standards. Responsible for annual performance evaluations and their submission to human resources. Responsible for verification and approval of timecards for staff. Consistently conducts employee rounding. Minimum Qualifications:#Associate degree or higher within an HIM related program is required.

Minimum of five years# experience in coding ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT. Five years of experience in a leadership or supervisory position where responsible for the quality and performance of staff. Experience with 3M 360 and Epic is preferred.

Masterly level experience with reading a medical record to assign ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT4 codes, abstract data elements for billing and reporting, and assign DRG, APC, and APG as appropriate. Demonstrate excellent team building, change management and interpersonal communication skills. Certifications / Licensure:#Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) required. Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required.
