Seeking an experienced engineer to become a Brake Systems Engineer in the Chassis Systems Engineering Organization. The Brake Systems Engineer is responsible to ensure that system engineering methods are applied during the creation, development and validation of braking control systems used on autonomous vehicle programs. The Brake Systems Engineer is responsible for specifying brake control system requirements, analysis, bench marking, test procedures, issue resolution and validation. This person will verify that the brake systems work as expected under all operating conditions with nominal, six sigma and failed components.

  • Develop requirements for Control Autonomous Vehicle Motion

  • Design the Control Vehicle Motion system architecture and integration to the Autonomous Vehicle feature

  • Coordinate chassis actuator system and their interactions to support AV driving

  • Development of AV driving performance and comfort metrics

  • Support integration between Cruise and GM Systems

  • Develop requirements for external vehicle controls for AV vehicles

  • Translates brake feature related requirements into functional/physical brake system technical specifications and decompose those requirements to sub-systems and components as required

  • Ensure that the defined brake system meets the fault tolerant / functional reliability requirements of an autonomous vehicle and interacts correctly with other vehicle systems under all operating conditions

  • Create system DFMEA's and ensure roll-down of DFMEA failure modes to associated subsystem DFMEA's and PFEMA's

  • Collaborate on system verification and validation plans/procedures

  • Work with component and vehicle engineering to ensure system/subsystem interfaces are working as defined

  • Supports the brake organizations sourcing process with specification development and supplier technical reviews

  • Provide technical brake system support throughout all phases of the vehicle program to ensure robust program execution and performance

  • Use change management process/tools for configuration management of specifications

  • Identifies, tracks and resolves engineering issues

  • Travel as required

Basic Required:

  • Candidate must have one of the following engineering degrees: BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering or Computer Science Engineering

  • Working knowledge of Brake Systems, including mechanical systems, electro-mechanical devices, electric motors, embedded control systems, and electrical control units

  • Working knowledge of Brake System development, integration, verification, validation and the vehicle manufacturing processes

  • Understand Brake System hardware design and failure modes

  • Understand the engineering theory and principles of Vehicle Dynamics

  • Understand Systems Engineering methods (e.g., H-P Methods) and effective scoping of the required work products

  • Understand appropriate content for Vehicle and System Level Specifications

  • Understanding of system reliability, safety, monitoring, and diagnostic techniques and processes

  • Understand Chassis System development, verification, validation and vehicle manufacturing processes

  • Understand the capability and application of various analytical tools Matlab Simulink, dSpace Microautobox

  • Proactive / results driven individual with high levels of initiative

  • High level analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex

  • High level of oral and written communication skills

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and negotiate effectively with others to meet mutual goals

  • Ability to learn, apply knowledge and work independently with minimal supervision

  • This position requires legally operating a motor vehicle on a daily basis

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four or more years' experience with brake control systems, electromechanical devices, and electrical control units

  • Experience developing embedded control systems

  • Working knowledge of the engineering theory and principles of Vehicle Dynamics, including the tire friction circle, and vehicle bicycle model

  • Understanding of ISO 26262 Functional Safety process

Maintains an energy management program to ensure measures are taken to operate all systems in the most efficient manner to keep operating costs at a minimum. Maintains the building lighting system, including element and ballast repairs or replacements. Performs carpentry tasks as needed. Responds quickly to emergency situations, summoning additional assistance as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. No formal supervisory responsibilities in this position.
