Information Sciences Institute (ISI), a unit of USC's Viterbi School of Engineering, is a world leader in the research and development of advanced information processing, computing, and communications technologies. ISI operates one of the world's largest academic high-performance computing clusters. ISI has three research campuses: one in Marina Del Rey, CA; one in Arlington, VA; and one in Waltham, MA.
The Center for Video, Image, Speech and Text Analytics (VISTA) is seeking a System Administrator/DevOps Engineer to support its high-performance compute cluster infrastructure. This is a large compute cluster containing 100+ GPUs, machines with high CPU counts and machines with a large amount of RAM, which supports a diverse collection of research teams at VISTA. We are looking for both full-time and part-time candidates.
Responsibilities would include:
Day to day maintenance of cluster, including responding to outages or disruptions
Management of our grid scheduler, including working with researchers to handle evolving needs related to scheduling jobs, e.g. job priorities, user & project-based resource quotas, etc
Working with researchers to guide future equipment purchases & grow the cluster in a way that meets their workload needs
Developing long-term vision for cluster, e.g. deciding on storage & network strategies that can help improve cluster utility
Proactively identify and resolve system reliability and performance concerns.
Provide analytical and technical expertise on system integration, installation, replacement and upgrades of servers and operating systems.
Develop and maintain appropriate system documentation. Formulate standards for system management
Important skills needed for this job include:
Experience with Linux (CentOS,Ubuntu) server management
Experience with industry leading network equipment; Palo Alto Networks, Arista, Cisco Networks
Hands on experience in building fault-tolerant and scalable systems
Experience with automation and orchestration, e.g. Chef, Puppet, Ansible, shell scripting, python
Experience provisioning Linux clusters
Managing common open source software dependencies, and comfort with building open source dependencies from source code when needed
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Public cloud administration and architecture, e.g. AWS, Azure, etc
Metrics collection, centralized logging, and trending/alerting tools
Virtualization: e.g. VMWare vSphere, KVM, and/or OpenStack
Containerization, e.g. docker
Strong candidates will be self-motivated and ready to engage in lively technical give-and-take.

Minimum Experience: 5 years
Minimum Field of Expertise: Expert understanding and strong technical knowledge of and experience with systems administration, backups, operating systems programming languages and associated hardware platforms. Possesses the required knowledge to build, configure, load and restore a system from the ground up. Previous systems administration experience required.
