Hiram College is seeking a full time System Administrator. The primary duties of the System Administrator are to manage and maintain the College's servers, computer systems, network infrastructure, and devices to enhance and augment the overall productivity and usefulness of the College's computing and communication infrastructure.

The Systems Administrator is held accountable for network installation, setup, configuration, and annual maintenance on a variety of servers (e.g. mail and file servers). Program and script to execute tasks across various applications. Tasked with providing active directory administration and a reliable, secure work environment. Keep track of server performance, identify any problems, and repair systems as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the operational functionality of hardware and software resources by managing the setup, configuration, service, support, and preventative maintenance of data center servers and network systems at the College.

  • Proactively address the College's information technology systems and email requirements, provide for scalability, reliability, security and efficient IT infrastructure that includes Data Center facilities, networks, servers, storage and enterprise IT applications.

  • Proactively maintain the network infrastructure, device configurations, and the physical, virtual, and wireless connections.

  • Provide hands-on analysis, design, troubleshooting, installation, implementation, tuning, and administration of the local-area wired, wireless, and wide-area networks, and all associated equipment.

  • Supervise and support major computer/network system upgrades and replacements.

  • Test and evaluate assigned software packages and proposed hardware to determine efficiency, reliability, and compatibility with existing computer systems and the network.

  • Evaluate performance and capacity planning analysis; identify, diagnose, and resolve bottlenecks.

  • Maintain expertise in a wide range of and state-of-the-art IT hardware, software, services and techniques.

  • Manage the backup and restoration process of files, ensure backups are secured, and occur on a regularly basis.

  • Functionally administer all IT service requests using the Help Desk ticketing systems.

  • Maintain frequent and professional communication with the appropriate users and IT staff.

  • Maintain a current inventory of all assigned technology equipment.

  • Escalate all high priority or sensitive customer requests/concerns to the Technical Services Director.

  • Ensure minimal disruption of delivery of services and minimal risk of data breaches by identifying operational risks, implementing industry best practices, and meeting or exceeding security and compliance guidelines.

  • Assist with prioritizing IT resources and infrastructure consistent with Institutional objectives and priorities.

  • Assist with implementing virtual architectures, cloud-based services, and vendor provided infrastructures.

  • Delegate appropriate work to student employees. Assist student employees as necessary with their tasks and provide training as appropriate.

  • Program and script to execute tasks across various applications.

  • Consistent workplace attendance on campus (limited work from home capability).

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse population.

  • Ability to work in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to support, administer, and troubleshoot: Active Directory; File, Print, and Email Services; DNS/DHCP; Scripting; SharePoint; Server, Security, and Infrastructure Technologies; Data Center Facility Management.

  • Able to support, administer, and troubleshoot Cisco and Juniper networks and devices.

  • Ability to read and comprehend vendor manuals and technical procedures.

  • Excellent time-management, planning, and organizational skills.

  • Must be reliable and an organized self-starter.

Experience and Education:

  • 3 years prior experience required in systems and email administration.

  • Prior experience in network administration preferred, including Juniper Mist.

  • Systems and networking certifications preferred, including CCNA.

  • Understanding that a high degree of professional confidentiality is expected with this position.

Other Requirements:

  • Be on-call and work outside of regular hours as needed.

  • Access to a personal computer with high-speed Internet connectivity during off-hours.

  • Frequent walking among and between campus buildings.

  • Access to reliable transportation.

  • Occasional lifting and carrying computing equipment (up to 25 lbs.)
