Guidance Counselor

Guidance Counselor for Middle School Arts Audition Boot Camp

Approximately 3 positions

LOCATION:

Various locations - including 4360 Broadway, Manhattan; 49 Flatbush Ave. Ext., Brooklyn; LaGuardia HS, Julia Richman Educational Complex, and Lincoln Center Campus

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Currently employed or appointed as a regularly licensed NYCDOE Guidance Counselor.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Five or more years of satisfactory experience in middle school or high school programs.

  • Experience preparing middle school students for entry into specialized and screened high schools in the arts.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Able to work collaboratively with NYCDOE arts specialists and teaching artists.

  • Ability to provide assistance and information to students and parents in regards to the high school application process, and interview preparedness.

  • Willingness and availability to attend meetings and related events after school, weekends or during the summer

  • Ability to maintain accurate records and submit timely reports and documents

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and families and provide motivation

  • Willingness to carry out their duties and responsibilities

  • Evidence of successful engagement strategies with regard to social/emotional development

  • Knowledge of and experience with contemporary issues that affect multilingual and immigrant families

  • Success in working collaboratively with colleagues, parents/caregivers and partners

  • Evidence of success in forming successful partnerships with community-based organizations and other organizations that offer social and emotional supports to students

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills

  • Conscientious and efficient in fulfilling commitments, adhering to deadlines, and achieving desired outcomes

  • Strong people skills, with the capacity to empathize and build trusting relationships with students and their parents and/or families and staff

  • Ability to offer leadership to staff and teachers around the social and emotional development of students

  • Ability to offer assistance to staff and teachers regarding special needs or students in crisis

  • Success in working collaboratively with colleagues, parents/caregivers and partners

  • Ability to retrieve, organize, and report student data using all NYCDOE data systems (e.g. ARIS, STARS, AIS, SESIS)

  • Preference for those who have applied to and are already participating in the Middle School Arts Audition Boot Camp Spring 2024 work season

Note: Applicants for per session employment who are not employed in the Department of Education's regular school program or adult education program shall be considered for selection only if no qualified day employee or adult education employee is available.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Outreach to students' families to ensure consistent attendance and participation

  • Plan, organize, and help facilitate family orientation and informational sessions

  • Must attend and monitor student auditions and screenings

  • Must attend all staff meetings

  • Practice counseling to facilitate professional growth and collaboration that supports overall learning environment for students

  • Counsel students, individually and in groups, regarding discipline-related guidance issues, social and emotional development, conflict mediation, and/or trauma, as needed

  • Collaborating to develop and implement behavior intervention plans to support the social and emotional development of students in the arts

  • Collaborate with administration, teachers and teaching artists to provide expertise on socio-emotional aspects of learning in the arts

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities that the program may require in accordance with the UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Maintain communication with student participants' families and Supervisors, as needed

  • Ensure professional, timely reporting of incidences to Director of Arts Education Accountability and Support, and perform all requested follow-up actions and communications

WORK SCHEDULE:

July: some additional audition planning, application review, inquiries, staff meetings and IEP and 504 reviews, up to but not limited to approximately 50 hours

August 5 - 16, 2024 (Monday

  • Friday, 8:00 am

  • 4:00 pm, up to but not limited to approximately 7 hours per day for 10 days of camp

Fall 2024 (Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 am

  • 4:00 pm), up to but not limited to approximately 14 hours for student follow-up weekend

Extended days and additional evening and weekend hours may be scheduled leading up to, during and following the program, including but not limited to supply distribution, orientations, and field trips.

Up to approximately 200 hours per position. Additional hours granted upon the approval of the hiring manager.

Note: As program is subject to funding, all dates, times, and hours to be confirmed

SALARY:

Per Session rates as per the relevant union/organization of the advertised title (Collective Bargaining Agreement). Contingent upon funding availability and programmatic approval.
