POSITION:
FAMILY WORKER - STUDENTS IN TEMPORARY HOUSING (STH)
(UP TO 19 POSITIONS AVAILABLE)
STUDENTS IN TEMPORARY HOUSING, OFFICE OF COMMUNITY SUPPORTS AND WELLNESS
SUPERVISOR: DISTRICT STH REGIONAL MANAGER
LOCATION:
DHS family shelter, various addresses
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Current NYC Public Schools Family Work in a DHS shelter location, supported through Students in Temporary Housing, in the Office of Community Supports and Wellness. Must have at least a High School Diploma
SELECTION CRITERIA:
At least two (2) years of satisfactory service within the NYCPS.
Strong relationship management skills, particularly with students and families affected by homelessness, as well as DHS shelter staff
Experience providing training, coaching and support, including shadowing
Ability to effectively refer students and families to public benefits and other supports
Proficiency with ATS system, Insight, Student Profile, and New Visions including the ability to obtain and monitor information regarding student attendance
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerBi, google drive.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Greet and engage STH families and students as they enter the shelter, conduct intake interviews, share essential information about educational rights and resources, and maintain ongoing communication with the family to ensure delivery of support. This work will be completed in person
Support STH students and families with return to school planning
Resolve escalated student or family challenges, particularly regarding student transportation, school placement and registration, mid-year transfers, documentation of housing status, distribution of learning supplies and other related issues.
Serve as a liaison for families and students with shelter-based staff, school administrators, guidance counselor(s), attendance teacher(s), Community Coordinator(s),Bridging the Gap Social Workers, Community School Director(s), the Office of Pupil Transportation, and other support personnel, facilitating referral to school- and shelter-based supports (e.g., access to public benefits, attendance improvement and academic achievement, mental health supports, and other needed services).
Use data regarding chronic absenteeism and academic success to coordinate tailored, data-driven, culturally relevant, trauma-informed strategies and supports for children and families. Record and monitor information regarding interventions and referrals.
Provide information for school-, hotel- and shelter-based staff on promising practices to support and refer students and families to services and resources.
Conduct shelter, hotel or school site visits with families to share information about important services and supports and ensure that necessities (e.g., school materials, transportation and supplementary educational services) are readily available.
Distribute and track emergency MetroCards given to parents to accompany their children to school, support parents with getting Metrocards at their child's school
Facilitate training and presentations to families living in shelters so families are aware of available resources.
WORK SCHEDULE:
September 5th, 2024 to June 30th, 2024. Up to 60 hours total throughout the school year; no school holidays
Hours up to, but not limited to the approximate number of hours listed. Additional hours may be granted upon the approval of the hiring manager.
SALARY:
Extra Hours rates as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Contingent upon funding availability and programmatic approval.
