Responsibilities
Computer Operator Lead Laboratory
Accurately maintains the necessary procedures, documentation, and records to ensure the Laboratory Information System (LIS) is in an "inspection ready" state to meet CAP guidelines and all other applicable standards and regulations including the FDA, HCFA, OSHA, and DNV.
Maintains system and related documentation including routine operating policies, procedures, and backup contingency plans. Follow system user security per UP policy. Oversees the routine updating of system tables and directories such as the test catalog, SharePoint site, and Teams.
Superuser of laboratory applications and programs including Sunquest Lab, PowerPath, etc.
Works with IT to plan and implement periodic vendor updates and releases. Provides structure for scheduled and unscheduled troubleshooting and maintenance. Works with the IT department to coordinate the smooth accurate transmission of information across the LIS/HIS interface and other interfaces as appropriate. Regularly generates informational, statistical, and audit reports.
Documents and plans replacement schedule for all non-capital and fixed (capital) equipment. Researches and assists with the following of evaluation, budgets, and submitting proposals to replace existing software and hardware. Coordinates validation, tests, and implements updates, enhancements, new software, and systems according to approved protocols.
Works with the local leadership to establish a framework of clerical policies, procedures, and documentation attendant to LIS operations.
Provides initial Lab applications training for new laboratory staff members, including students and completion of the HR new hire checklist for LIS system. Submits IT and security tickets for new users and staff.
Communicates information regarding IT and LIS services for UPH and UPH St. Luke's related to policies, procedures, and training. Acts as a resource to assist staff with understanding and compliance with mandated IT policies and procedures.
Acts as the point of contact for external clients by providing IT technical expertise, consultation, and support to clinics and customers of Laboratory outreach program. Notifies clients of changes in testing, delays, or downtimes. Works to be aware of customer needs and proactively works to resolve issues.
Assumes responsibility for personal technical competency and continuing education by attending professional meetings, workshops, Medical Center provided educational opportunities, and involvement in professional organizations. Actively participates outside the department with educational, committee, and or service work.
Computer Operator Lead Laboratory
Works in close cooperation with the Laboratory Management, holding regular meetings with supervisors to receive direction from Lab Technical, Lab Outreach, and Client Support Managers.
Identifies and leads lean initiatives to promote quality and reduce waste in laboratory practice, by collaborating with the UPH Lab Leadership.
Assists with internal audits of pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic operational Process Improvement activities to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Interacts with Laboratory management staff in developing process changes to meet regulations
Assists with the design of strategies to evaluate processes to make process improvements
Coordinates the analysis of processes to identify appropriate preventive actions
Assists with the evaluation of the event management program outcomes and the internal/external audits to assist Laboratory Management staff in developing appropriate corrective actions
Assists in defining problem areas for Performance Improvement/balanced scorecard indicators
Ensures that timely and accurate clinical diagnostic information is provided to healthcare professionals so that patient care and customer service is of the highest quality. This includes monitoring failed faxes and chart corrections.
Communicates clearly, openly, and consistently with Lab Management and staff to assure common access to hospital and department information to promote trust and confidence.
Recommends modifications to enhance the effectiveness of present IT and Performance Improvement operations.

Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Basic understanding of computer databases or computer programming. Understanding of medical laboratory workflows. Lab information system understanding preferred.
