SWIMMING INSTRUCTOR

POSITION SUMMARY

The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes and private swimming lessons. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for upholding the Judeo-Christian principles that are central to our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify the four pillars of character - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Pay- $10/hr.

Hours: Group Lessons- Monday/Wed. 4:30- 6:45 pm; Tuesday/Thurs. 4:30-6:45pm, Saturday 8:30-11:30am.

Must be able to work at Saturday lessons.

Private lessons schedule based on instructor availability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.

  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with all individuals associated with the swim lesson programs, helping them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement with minor students and identifies potential volunteers.

  • Conveys information on aquatic programs and schedules and as appropriate refers individuals to other programs.

  • Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.) and distributes mid-term reports, report cards and progress reports for each session.

  • Attends all Aquatics staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Assists lifeguards as needed in emergency situations. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.

  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment and reports damaged equipment to supervisor.

  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.

  • When pool is closed due to weather or contamination, employee is required to assist front desk with aquatic issues until pool re-opens.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Requires one to three months related experience and/or training, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be at least 16 years of age.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before participants and parents. Ability to provide detailed instructions regarding swim techniques and break down stroke mechanics into simple steps. Must have sufficient organizational skills to get required reports completed and distributed in a timely fashion.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; swim and tread water and talk or hear. Must be able to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stand, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move equipment and a person up to 100 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and ability see while in or out of the water.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals (chlorine), extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.

  • Requires YMCA Swim Instructor certification or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification with crossover to Y Swim Instructor certification within 6 months. CPR/AED, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogen certification required upon hire and must be current at all times
