We are currently seeking swim instructors/lifeguards to join the Staten Island aquatics staff for summer 2019. We're looking for reliable, responsible individuals with a love for swimming.

Our aquatics staff teach children to swim and provide supervision for our three swimming pools and ensure a safe environment at the pool complex, all-the-while ensuring that the more than 1200 campers and counselors who swim daily do so safely.

Swim instruction is taught according to the Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy curriculum and SwimRight method.

  • Season: June 27 - August 23 (not including Training)
  • Pay: $3300 for the season

Applicants do not need to have prior experience working as a lifeguard or swim instructor. HKC will provide the curriculum and train you in how to teach swim.


  • Supervise and guard all swim activities to help prevent and manage injuries.

  • Teach swimming to 4-5 groups of campers daily

  • Provide rescues as needed

  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures while at the pools

  • Daily set-up and close down of pools


  • Lifeguard certification*
  • AED/CPR certification
  • WSI certification a plus
  • HKC offer up to $300 in course tuition reimbursement. Ask about it when you apply. You must have your certification by June 20.


  • Customer oriented

  • Enjoy working with children

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to critical incidents

  • Physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency

  • Ability to work on a team and work well with others

  • Ability to spend the entire day outdoors, under the sun

  • Experience working with children with special needs a plus

HKC requires all applicants submit three references. At least two of them must be from an adult connected to work or school.


Home to 13 independently run JCC day camps, the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds, is a small Jewish non-profit, that manages and operates three facilities located in Long Island, Rockland County and Staten Island. Our mission is to enhance the camp experience and provide a safe environment for the campers and counselors who call our grounds home. On any given summer day we welcome more than 5000 campers and camp staff through our gates. As a seasonal organization, HKC hires 200+ seasonal workers to provide lifeguarding, swim instruction, first-aid care, maintenance, housekeeping and security to ensure we can carry out mission and meet the needs of the camps who camp at HKC.
