POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator/Director the position's primary goal is to instruct swim lessons for members in accordance with the objectives and policies set forth by the Association.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly or by following provided plans.

  • Maintains attendance and skill accomplishment records.

  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.

  • Promotes Association programs and objectives as well as the national goals of the YMCA.

  • Maintains all required aquatic certifications.

  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.

  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.

  • Builds and maintains a high standard of member service with all members.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ABUSE RISK MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS:

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with consumers.

  • Attends required abuse risk management training.

  • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.

  • Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or general education (GED); or one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be 18 or older.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in a professional format. Ability to speak effectively before groups of members and/or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to reason logically and accurately while developing good working relationships with fellow employees and Public.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers Certification (within 30 days of hire)

  • Swim Instructor certification or equivalent

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

  • Must display visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents as well as the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.

  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate management techniques.

  • Must successfully pass a water test consisting of various strokes and general swimming skills.
