Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Please note:

  • We are hiring for multiple vacancies and applications will be reviewed as they are submitted.

  • Regular monthly lifeguard trainings will be held for incoming candidates on an as-needed basis

  • Work shifts for this position will vary, but staff is generally needed weekday mornings from 5:45am-10:15am, and weekday afternoons from 1:45pm-9:45pm.

Job Summary

Conducts a wide variety of swimming, diving, and specialty aquatic activities. Ensures patron safety, and performs patron surveillance, instruction, record keeping, progress reports, minor facility maintenance and custodial tasks, and other duties as assigned. Promotes and cultivates an environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion, and engages in evidence-based decision-making, while supporting the mission, goals, and values of the department and college. Works special events, evenings, weekends, and split shifts as needed.

Essential Duties

  • Respectfully engages with all patrons and fellow staff members in keeping with Mt. Hood Community College policies addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion for college classes and activities.

  • Teaches swimming, diving, and specialty aquatic courses to children and adults in accordance with American Red Cross safety guidelines.

  • Enforces pool regulations and educates patrons about pool rules and water safety.

  • Recognizes emergencies and performs aquatic emergency rescues when necessary and in accordance with American Red Cross guidelines.

  • Ensures pools, decks, changing areas and staff areas of the aquatic center are kept clean and orderly.

  • Completes required forms and documentation of day-to-day functions and safety checks within the aquatic center.

  • Completes chemical checks of pool water. Assists with other basic maintenance tasks as needed.

  • Provides excellent internal and external customer service to all patrons and staff at the aquatic center. Assists with front desk area and cash handling on an as needed basis.

  • Attends all required safety trainings and maintains American Red Cross certifications.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age

  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with participants, parents, staff and supervisor(s)

  • Commitment to embracing and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion at Mt. Hood Community College

  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and/or Water Safety Instruction or ability to obtain certification within 60 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with, teaching or babysitting children

  • Aquatic instructor and/or swim coaching experience

  • Meet or event management experience

  • Experience as an aquatic athlete

Working Conditions

Works variable schedule and exhibits regular and predictable attendance. Work may be performed in an office and recreation facility. Work may be performed in an outdoor or indoor facility during variable weather conditions.
