Job Summary:

This Swim Instructor or Lifeguard (In Training) will shadow certified swim instructors or lifeguards while working to obtain required certifications up to but no longer than 90 days of hire date. The incumbent will provide excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Shadow and assist certified swim instructors and lifeguards and learn programming and emergency procedures.

  • Know, understand, and consistently communicate policies and procedures for the pool, body of water and whirlpool.

Relationships:

This position reports to the Sr. Coordinator/Aquatics Director who reports to the Branch Management. The incumbent interacts regularly with their supervisor, staff, volunteers, and participants.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Required

  • Minimum age of 16.

  • Certifications required within 45 days of hire: BLS, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration.

  • Certification required within 90 days of hire: YMCA Swim Instructor or nationally accredited lifeguard certification.

  • Patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers.

  • Demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water (Stage 5 level swimming skill) or physically able to perform all skills required for a lifeguard.

  • Dedicated to member safety and the mission and philosophy of the YMCA

Work Conditions:

  • Must remain in the pool area at all times.

  • Ability to support child or adult body weight in the water.

  • Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and remedy hazardous/dangerous situations.

  • Ability to recognize and react calmly and effectively in hazardous/dangerous situations.

  • Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.

  • Perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time in a warm pool environment.

The incumbent provides feedback and direction to individual swimmers during swim practice and swim meets. The incumbent provides high level of customer service and ensures a safe and positive program environment. Essential Functions: * Provides swim team coaching instruction to individual participants of various ages and who possess differing levels of ability. * Maintains constant observation of program participants, watches for swimmers needing assistance, and aids swimmers when necessary to ensure positive learning environment. * Develops season goals for the participants and groups assigned and develops weekly workout plans which ensure efficient programing. * Serves as first level contact responding and documenting incidents which may occur. * Provides quality customer service to members, volunteers and participants. Relationships: This position reports to the Director of Healthy Living. The incumbent interacts regularly with staff, participants, members and volunteers. The position regularly interacts with children, youths, and, adults. Requirements Qualifications: (Required) * Minimum age of 18 * Obtain certification in CPR/PR, AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches or Lifeguard Training and Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming and USA Swimming Level 1 within 30 days of hire. * Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations. * See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations. * Effective verbal and written communication skills * Good organization skills * Ability to manage and deliver programs to a diverse population. * Ability to serve as a positive role model and provide constructive feedback Preferred: * One (1) year experience in a YMCA setting. * Minimum of six (6) months of experience interacting or coaching a swim team. * Current Instructor/Trainer Certification for designated Program Area. * USA Swimming Level 2 Certification.
