Summary:

The job of SWIM INSTRUCTOR is responsible for the teaching of skills related to the level of the course being offered. The instructor is directly responsible for knowing the procedures, action plans, and methods of instruction best suited to the students in each course.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instructors are responsible for teaching all skills needed to pass the level they are teaching.

  • Teach methods of swimming following program standards and stress water safety.

  • Attendance and report card certificates are the instructors' responsibility.

  • Work with supervisor during lesson registration.

  • Give 2-week advance notice for sessions that you will not be teaching.

  • Oversee clean up all equipment used during classes at the end of class.

  • Adhere to SKSD Aquatic policy on scheduling private lessons outside of regular lesson schedule.

  • Discriminate between swimming skill proficiency levels and offer corrective feedback.

  • Any level changes must be cleared with the supervisor.

  • All certifications must be kept updated and on file at the pool office.

  • Instructors moving from one area of the pool to another need to get out of the pool and walk with their class.

  • Instructors shall demonstrate genuine interest in student's progress.

  • Maintain a positive, supportive, yet assertive approach to teaching.

  • Provide group practice as well as individual correction.

  • Use a variety of techniques in order to reach all students.

  • Provide well organized lessons that flow from beginning to end.

  • Ensure the safety of students through close observation at all times.

  • Use appropriate drills and methods for student's level and age.

  • Use patience, enthusiasm, confidence, employ a sense of humor, sense of imagination, and an authoritative but instructive voice, while teaching various swimming skills.

  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position as described.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participation in required staff meetings/in-services.

  • Remain calm under noisy and confusing conditions.

  • Demonstrate aquatic skills accurately.

  • Plan, organize and direct safe and progressive swim lessons.

  • Discern unsafe situations and take the initiative to correct the situation.

  • Follow and enforce all pool and diving rules.

  • Follow directives of supervisor in charge.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including utilizing Point of Sale software applications; planning and managing multiple projects; and developing effective working relationships.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform review and interpret technical information, write summary reports and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: excellent oral and written communication; organizational and time management; conflict resolution skills; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; current and developing technology.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; flexible to changing conditions; making quick and accurate decisions; working with multiple projects; dealing with frequent interruptions and changing priorities; maintaining confidentiality; and facilitating communication between person with frequent divergent positions. Must also have the ability to attend evening and weekend meetings and trainings.

Experience:

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

  • Ability to plan, organize and conduct an appropriate course for each assigned class.

  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team with a minimum of supervision.

  • Currently possess or become proficient in the skills taught.

  • Must be dependable and able to get along with other people.

  • Full knowledge of pool rules pool facilities.

  • Available to work evenings and weekends.

Required Testing:

  • Swim Instructor skill demonstration(s).

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

The environmental factors described here are representative of those that may be present in the workplace while the employee performs the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: swimming, occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. Generally, the job requires 60% water related activity, 20% walking and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.
