Under the close supervision of the Head Swim Instructor, Pool Manager or Recreation Superintendent performs varied routine duties in teaching swim lessons in accordance with City and Department policies.   Work requires flexible hours (weekends, mornings, and evenings. May be required to perform lifeguard duties when necessary, only if swim instructor is also current in Red Cross lifeguard certification. Performs other work as required.

  • Maintains class attendance reports and course records.

  • Performs general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility.

  • Provides a safe and positive environment for class participants.

  • Communicates regularly with participants and patrons as appropriate, regarding student progress.

  • Prepares and delivers technical guidance, age appropriate, and skill focused lessons based upon participant's abilities.

  • Completes incident/accident reports as necessary.

  • May be required to perform duties as a lifeguard when necessary

  • Must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.

  • Must be able to swim 100 yards (4 lengths of the pool) continuously.

  • Must be able to swim 25 yards (1 length of the pool) front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), breaststroke, elementary backstroke, side stroke and 15 yards butterfly.

  • Must have working cell phone and email address for contact purposes.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • Must possess or be able to obtain Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within 1 month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR, AED certification within 1 month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.

  • Knowledge of current swimming techniques, CPR, and First Aid.

  • Ability to effectively interpret and implement Red Cross curriculum and guidelines for swim lessons.

  • Ability to determine the appropriate skill level for participants.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to understand and communicate with children.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Ability to walk, stand, reach, kneel, and lift throughout the working day.

  • Ability to see clearly.

  • Ability to hear.

  • Ability to work in hot, cold, humid, wet and loud environments.
