Do you have a passion for working with members of the community and fostering Seattle's Zero Waste vision? The Solid Waste Branch of Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has an exciting half-time (0.5 FTE) position for you! We are looking for a self-motivated and well-organized people-person to lead Seattle's Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) and to assist with other projects in the Solid Waste Planning and Program Management Division.

The Solid Waste Advisory Committee Coordinator leads Seattle's SWAC, an advisory body mandated by RCW 70A.205.110 to provide recommendations and informed advice to SPU regarding solid waste management issues, and assists with other solid waste projects. The best candidates for this position will have experience with planning, coordinating, and facilitating groups of people and meetings, such as a board or commission, serving as a liaison between an organization or agency and the public, and volunteering or working with the community. Highly qualified candidates will also demonstrate excellent public speaking skills and close attention to details.

The selected hire will need to be available to lead evening community meetings on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. This is a half-time position with full benefits that is set to work 20 hours per week. A flexible schedule is possible.

Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) Support:

  • Conduct needs assessment, planning, implementation, management, promotion, support, and oversight of SPU's SWAC Program. This includes governance (e.g., Charter), annual committee topics and work plans, program budget, coordinating and supporting the SWAC executive team and subcommittees, facilitating monthly SWAC meetings (e.g., agenda and materials development, meetings with executive committee, arrange for speakers and updates, review and finalization of SWAC meeting summaries and materials for posting on SPU external webpage), and conducting annual SWAC membership (~15 volunteer committee members: e.g., annual recruitment process, application/interview procedures and process, on-boarding, tracking, supporting, retention, closure, alumni relations).

  • Contact and communicate with all levels of SPU management (e.g., CEO/GM, Solid Waste Branch Deputy and Division Directors, SPU Legislative/Mayoral liaisons, Solid Waste staff) to provide programmatic cohesion, coordination, updates, and address sensitive issues.

  • Liaison with staff to ensure coordination between SWAC priorities and workplan align with programmatic goals and resourcing.

  • Assisting with other Solid Waste Planning and Program Management projects as time allows, such as:

  • Waste Characterization Studies

  • Enhanced Residential Recycling Outreach Tools, Construction Waste Prevention and Diversion

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in planning, environmental studies, public administration, or related field

OR

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: 2 additional years of relevant experience.

AND

Experience:

  • Two years of experience in planning and research related to community engagement, board management, volunteer management, project management, human services, environmental issues, or other related work.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Solid Waste industry experience a plus

  • Experience working with the public, committees, boards, and volunteers

  • Belief that attention to details matters greatly to the success of the solution

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, and presentation skills

  • Ability to work independently in addition to thriving in team-based settings

  • Meeting facilitation and planning

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Project and workplan management experience

  • Experience in providing strong customer service

  • Able to be a team player and participate and learn from other Solid Waste team members

This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees are required to come into the office a minimum twice a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

  • This position requires working occasional evenings to attend meetings and events

The full salary range for this position is:  $41.66 - $48.48 Hourly
