Role Summary/Purpose:

This executive will be the lead attorney for Synchrony's Credit and Operations functions, offering counsel in areas of consumer finance operations, including credit, operations, and debt collection.

We're proud to offer you choice and flexibility. You have the option to be remote, and work from home, or come into one of our offices. You may be occasionally requested to commute to our nearest office for in person engagement activities such as team meetings, training and culture events.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide and manage day-to-day counseling relating to credit and underwriting, complaints/disputes, customer service, collections, and other operational matters.

  • Serve as strategic legal advisor relating to areas of responsibility, working with the business to develop innovative and compliant solutions for a continually evolving industry.

  • Support business in connection with internal governance processes (e.g., committee participation), regulatory requests, and other matters pertaining to areas of responsibility.

  • Establish yourself among many internal constituents across diverse functions as a trusted business advisor whose advice, counsel, and judgment can be relied upon.

  • Collaborate with corporate functions, including Credit, Technology and Operations, and Risk to identify and manage risk.

  • Anticipate issues and evaluate risks strategically by, among other things, identifying proactive solutions to address risk while assisting the business meet its legitimate objectives.

  • Provide thought leadership, strategic consultation, and innovative solutions regarding challenges and opportunities to influence and shape key business decisions.

  • Maintain strong understanding of current regulations and regulatory trends and provide relevant, actionable advice and guidance when needed.

  • Partner with, and effectively manage, outside counsel when appropriate.

  • Lead and deliver other projects as required and perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications/Requirements:

In addition to holding a JD from an accredited law school and admission in good standing to a state bar, the successful candidate will bring the following:

  • At least 7 years experience counseling consumer financial services companies on consumer-facing issues

  • Demonstrated and significant expertise in counseling on credit/underwriting (FCRA, ECOA), complaints/disputes (TILA/UDAAP), collections (FDCPA and related state laws), and/or other operational matters strongly preferred

  • Ability to distill complex topics for discussion and counseling with client at all levels of the organization

  • Proven track record of providing effective legal counsel and support in a dynamic corporate environment (or for dynamic corporate clients)

  • Have strong judgment and willingness to exercise it

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Characteristics:

  • Significant experience advising on matters relating to credit cards, installment loans, and other consumer lending products

  • Robust interpersonal, networking, public speaking, and writing skills, with the confidence and credibility to act quickly, communicate effectively with diplomacy and civility, and command the respect of both internal and external audiences. An individual with confidence inspiring gravitas and a "calm under pressure" demeanor.

  • Flexible, collaborative approach, positive attitude, and role model for the legal function. Fosters a culture of trust, inclusion and transparency. Works well with others and as part of a cohesive team. Ability to build strong working relationships with internal business clients at all levels of management and cross-functional teams to develop solutions to sophisticated legal and business problems.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to handle multiple, conflicting priorities while managing a substantial workload and client expectations.

  • Possess entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to voice unpopular opinions if they are the right approach for the business.

  • Prior law firm experience

  • Prior in-house experience with a large consumer financial services company

Grade/Level: 15

The salary range for this position is 200,000.00 - 330,000.00 USD Annual. This position is also eligible for an Annual Incentive Plan target of 25% of salary and an Annual Equity target of 25% of salary.

Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge.

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months' time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months' time in position before they can post. All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don't meet the time in position or performance expectations).
