Sustainability Communications Associate

We are seeking a Sustainability Communications Associate who will report to the Assistant Director of Sustainability and leads the Office of Sustainability's communications and design portfolio bringing diverse technical and interpersonal skills to create scalable resources and relationships that empower stakeholders at all levels to learn about JHU's sustainability commitments, resources, and practices.

The ideal candidate will bring a deep knowledge of sustainability issues and communications management that allows them to translate complex topics to diverse audiences. This individual will develop toolkits, graphics, website content, articles, and more to engage and inform university-wide audiences, while building strategic partnerships across the institution. Strong writing and speaking skills, a background in managing diverse communications platforms, and a desire to serve on a growing and collaborative team are essential.

Specific Duties $ Responsibilities

  • Lead the Office of Sustainability's communications and marketing efforts, ensuring information regarding university-wide sustainability goals, initiatives, and progress are effectively communicated to internal and external audiences.

  • Lead the office's graphic design efforts, providing strategic guidance and design execution for branding of office print and electronic collateral following JHU guidelines.

  • Develop strategies, content, and delivery for communication activities to diverse stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, university leaders, and external audiences using variety of tools and platforms such as JHU Hub stories, Today's Announcements, social media, websites, newsletters, and broadcast emails.

  • Manage the JHU Sustainability website by keeping content updated with regular news and information, and ensure website layout and organization is maintained effectively to communicate to audiences at all levels.

  • Work closely with marketing and communications professionals across schools and divisions, including in Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate Department and University Communications, to develop content that reaches strategic audiences and enhances the university's sustainability image.

  • Identify team needs for design and communications support and provides project management on select projects with external firms and consultants.

  • Guide and support university leaders in their roles as spokespeople for matters related to university sustainability issues, projects, programs, and progress towards goals - participating in forums and events and providing consultative editing and presentation content development.

  • Develop articles and other written content featuring sustainability news and information to university-wide audiences while strengthening information sharing across JHU networks.

  • Work with other Office of Sustainability staff to support the design creation of behavioral toolkits, resources, and guides that provide information to foster sustainable behavior change among student, staff, and faculty audiences.

  • Contribute to planning and marketing events that showcase the Office of Sustainability's mission, resources, and impact alongside other Office of Sustainability team members.

  • Supervise student interns to support communications content development and graphic design for the Office of Sustainability; provide mentorship and guidance for students' professional development.

  • Provide occasional communications analytics to track and measure progress on office's reach and engagement to intended audiences.

  • Offer flexible support to other team members on an as-needed basis to enhance office projects through communications, design, and content development.

  • Represent JHU at select conferences, events, and consortia as a means to share progress and efforts and ensure adoption of sector-wide best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required in sustainability, environmental studies or science, communications or marketing, or a related field.

  • Minimum four years of related experience required.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience creating and managing multimedia communications platforms including websites, newsletters, articles, toolkits, social media, and other content.

  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to translate information in verbal and written forms.

  • Outstanding project management and organizational skills, including the ability to lead a project team, prioritize tasks, and provide mentoring as needed.

  • Ability to manage a complex project portfolio and efficiently prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and with individuals at various levels across the university and externally.

  • Strong creative acumen and strategic design thinking capabilities.

  • Experience working in higher education a plus.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Proficient with the Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), WordPress and other website tools, Microsoft Suite PowerPoint, Canva, and other related tools

  • Familiar with web accessibility standards as well as best practices for usability, content styling and presentation, and search engine optimization.

Physical Requirements

  • General office setting, with occasional need to support in-person events and move and set-up event materials and supplies.

  • This role has a hybrid work modality with the ability for telework up to 2 days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree preferred.

  • In-depth knowledge of complex sustainability issues spanning multiple topics such as built environment, energy, waste, transportation, food, etc.

Starting Salary Range: $62,300 - $109,000 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
