Reed College seeks a recent college graduate that is an organized and driven person to be our Sustainability and Environmental Justice Scholar. This is a pilot position limited to a 12-month term.

The SEJ Scholar is a limited duration position with work duties supplementing and enriching Reed's regular academic programming by supporting the educational work of the Sustainability Office and co-curricular collaboration. Putting sustainability education into practice at our newest Living Learning Community at the Garden House, the SEJ Scholar reports to the Sustainability Coordinator, with guidance from the chairs of Environmental Humanities (EH) and Environmental Studies (ES). The SEJ Scholar lives in the Garden House and supports engagement with sustainability and environmental justice for the eight residents, as well as for the expanded Reed community through collaboration with the Sustainability Intern Program and partnered faculty. As a post baccalaureate special student, the SEJ Scholar will pursue a year-long, directed research experience with faculty mentors in ES and EH culminating in a transdisciplinary multimedia project on sustainability and environmental justice at Reed.

This is a part time job not to exceed 15 hours per week with an educationally-based stipend. During the academic year the college will pay you a total of $11,579 for this position, to be paid in stipends of $482.47 semi-monthly for 12 months of continued service, in addition to on campus housing (a private room in the Garden House), a board plan, and student health insurance.

What You'll Do

  • Complete a directed-research project mentored by a member of the ES or EH faculty each semester.

  • Support integrative learning and co-curricular partnerships for courses and events engaging questions of social and environmental justice across disciplinary boundaries.

  • Assist with place-based learning and field work in partnered courses by organizing logistics and transportation assistance, van driver certification, and coordination with relevant offices as needed.

  • Partner with the House Advisor to develop a lively educational environment conducive to the study and practice of sustainability and environmental justice in the Garden House.

  • Communicate about events, upcoming opportunities, and campus updates by serving as a communications hub for contributions to Reed News and the Sustainability and EH websites.

  • Collaborate with the Sustainability Office, EAH, and ES to connect Garden House to ongoing programming and promote opportunities for learning in the community.

  • Attend bi-weekly Sustainability Internship team meetings.

  • Model sustainability practices in the home - low/zero waste, composting, water and energy conservation, low carbon cooking, etc. Create an educational campaign to support behavior change in residence halls.

  • Support for the Mellon EH Summer Incubator (Summer 2025)

  • Create a transdisciplinary, multimedia project about Sustainability and Environmental Justice in the expanded Reed community incorporating directed research-experiences mentored by faculty in ES and EH.

  • Option to participate in place-based learning (e.g., field trips, field work, and community engagement) related to sustainability and environmental justice by permission of instructor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

  • Preferably recent graduate of Reed College

  • Driver's License and capacity to become van-driver certified by Reed College
