The Retirement Systems Division has an immediate opening for a Survivor Benefits Analyst.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, as well as retirement.

Recruitment range: $38,516 - $52,580

This position within the Benefits Processing Section is responsible for providing case management in the processing of the Death Benefits Programs for the State's public pension plans, including the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System, the Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System, and several other smaller plans serving public employees.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage death cases from when the deaths are reported until all benefits are paid to the beneficiaries

  • Research active and retired death cases to determine benefits payable, identify the beneficiaries, and calculate benefits

  • Determine eligibility based on factors identified by the General Assembly for death benefits

  • Send correspondence and forms to the beneficiaries, executors, lawyers, or affair handlers to provide information about the death case

  • Review and verify claim forms, death certificates, estate paperwork, and other required documents for accuracy and completeness

  • Audit files for the correct information to process payments to the beneficiaries

  • Analyze death match reports, enter unreported deaths in the system, and process benefits payable to the beneficiaries

  • Determine if death cases should be reviewed by the legal department to ensure benefits are paid according to the General Statutes

  • Determine which benefits are payable, calculate the benefits using Excel, and setup payments in the system

  • Review death cases to determine if there are any overpayments and ensure the amount is deducted from benefits payable to beneficiaries.

Retirement Systems Division

The Retirement Systems Division administers the statutory retirement and fringe benefit plans as authorized by the General Assembly of North Carolina. These include the following eight major retirement plans: Teachers and State Employees Retirement System (TSERS), Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System for Law Enforcement Officers (TSERS LEO), the Local Government Employees Retirement System (LGERS), Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System for Law Enforcement Officers (LGERS LEO), the Legislative Retirement System (LRS), the Consolidated Judicial Retirement System (CJRS), the Optional Retirement Program (ORP), and the Fire and Rescue Pension Fund.

The Survivor Benefits Processing section processes claims from surviving beneficiaries for death benefits.

Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of retirement laws, benefits administration, payroll, and/or directly related services, policies, and procedures; typically gained through professional work experience in similar roles/industries

  • Experience performing research, data collection, and analysis of information, reviewing and analyzing claim forms, estate paperwork, beneficiary forms, death certificates, member's employment records, and/or payroll records.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in software programs, databases, and information systems

  • Proven ability to utilize Microsoft Excel to verify calculations are accurate and to calculate benefits and overpayments

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
