Job Description:

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled technical work operating surveying instruments and related processing devices required for field survey operations.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS

Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its lack of administrative duties and from lower classes by its emphasis on surveying.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Sets up and operates a total station, theodolite, or transit to establish horizontal control. Locates existing lines.

Creates construction and survey baselines. Determines the relationship of various surface features to each other by means of horizontal and vertical measurements.

Sets up and operates levels to establish elevations for vertical control, construction layout, and to complete bench loops to establish and verify bench mark elevations.

Operates a data collector in conjunction with total station while performing as-built, topographic, boundary traverse, cross section, and construction lay-out surveys.

Acts as survey party chief for designated periods of time. Supervises Survey Technician I.

Attends work on continuous and regular basis.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists rest of survey party in clearing survey lines, setting points, and searching for monuments.

Performs varied sub-professional engineering tasks in office related to land surveying.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and two years experience in land survey work, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

Valid Florida Driver's License required.

NOTES

Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.

SELECTION FACTORS

Knowledge of techniques and practices of land surveying.

Knowledge of mathematics through the level of trigonometry and a working knowledge of data processing hardware and software.

Ability to perform as survey instrument person operating and maintaining varied equipment.

Ability to keep records of measurements and readings taken and reduce survey notes.

Ability to interpret specifications, maps, technical drawings, and manuals in performing survey operations and adapting to new equipment and techniques.
