The incumbent is a Surveying Technician working for the Oregon State Office and is assigned to the Division of Management Services, Branch of Geographic Sciences. The incumbent acts as the principal assistant to the crew chief of one of the Oregon State Office Cadastral Survey crews and is responsible for the conduct of field surveys in the temporary absence of the Cadastral Surveyor. The incumbent may assist in the preparation of field notes and plats describing the surveys. The incumbent will research various records of surveys required to restore or resurvey property lines. The incumbent may be required to complete all calculations to determine the bearing of lines, and determine horizontal distance utilizing slope and vertical measurement, use GPS for geodetic coordinates and boundary lines, keep standard field notes of surveys and traverses. When serving as a temporary survey crew chief, carries out daily work assignment and provides guidance and direction to other employees for assigned project. Incumbent may prepare draft reports relating to field inspections of survey measurements and monumentation. The incumbent may have contact with other surveyors, the general public, other federal, state, and county agencies, and private land owners. In addition, the incumbent is exposed to various environmental factors throughout the work period. Work is often conducted in adverse conditions such as snow, sleet, rain, sun, or extreme heat. Walking distances may vary from 100 feet to 4-5 miles in a day's work. Terrain may change in elevation as much as 4,000 feet in several miles. The incumbent will operate manual tools such as shovels and axes, as well as power tools such as chainsaws and drills. Incumbent will have a valid driver's license at all times.

In order to be rated as qualified for this position candidates must meet all qualification requirements as identified in the OPM Qualifications Standards Handbook. For GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the federal service, or completion of a full four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.For GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the federal service. or completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, plus one full year of graduate education related to the occupation For GS-7: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the federal service or completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, plus one full year of graduate education related to the occupation.
Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience are those which include use of surveying instruments, keeping standard field notes of surveys and traverses for preparation of rough draft field notes, and researching various records. This experience would be progressive in nature of responsibility and complexity for each grade level. Substitution of education for specialized experience when applying GS-05: 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required. Substitution of education for specialized experience when applying for GS-06 and Above: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
