About the Position: The New Orleans District provides for navigation, flood and hurricane risk reduction, environmental stewardship, and other water resources needs to benefit the people of southern Louisiana and the nation. The offices are located in modern energy efficient buildings in the uptown area of New Orleans overlooking the Mississippi River. Serve as primary instrument person in a crew obtaining geodetic, hydrographic, topographic, and survey control data.
Use equipment such as computers, GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers, total stations, and digital levels.
Complete notes, plot sketches, and drawings locating various hydrographic and topographic features.
Assist higher-graded office technicians and engineers in the performance of various tasks to include, but not limited to, survey calculations, draft sketches, and/or writing reports.
Completes data files, field books, daily log sheets, and other items to be used by office personnel for processing collected data.
50% or less - You may be expected to travel for this position.

The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.

The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs.
This position involves working in outdoor conditions often in remote sites that are subject to inclement weather such as severe rain and cold.
This position requires obtaining a USACE Class A1 boat operator's license for operating motorboats up to 26 feet in length within six months of appointment.
This position requires working an alternate work schedule of Monday through Thursday, 10 hour days, 4 days a week.

Experience and/or Education needed for the GS-06 Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) experience obtaining geodetic, hydrographic, topographic, and/or survey control data AND, 2) experience operating, maintaining and/or servicing a variety of measuring instruments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology.
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
Experience and/or Education needed for the GS-07 Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) experience obtaining geodetic, hydrographic, topographic, and survey control data AND, 2) experience operating, maintaining and servicing a variety of measuring instruments, AND 3) experience leading a team of individuals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology.
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
Time in Grade Requirement: Time-In-Grade requirement must be met no later than 30 days after the closing date of this announcement. Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) Position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade GS-05 for the GS 06 and/or GS 06 for the GS 07 (or equivalent). With regards to time-in-grade validation, if you held a position other than a GS pay plan, be sure your resume includes the pay plan and the salary you earned during the assignment. Without this information, your time-in-grade validation may not be able to be verified and will result in your not meeting the time-grade requirement for this vacancy.
