About the Position: The New Orleans District provides for navigation, flood and hurricane risk reduction, environmental stewardship, and other water resources needs to benefit the people of southern Louisiana and the nation. The offices are located in modern energy efficient buildings in the uptown area of New Orleans overlooking the Mississippi River. There is a childcare center and a fitness center on the premises, and free employee parking. Audubon Park is within walking distance.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary instrument person in a crew obtaining geodetic, hydrographic, topographic, and survey control data.

  • Use equipment such as computers, GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers, total stations, and digital levels.

  • Complete notes, plot sketches, and drawings locating various hydrographic and topographic features.

  • Assist higher-graded office technicians and engineers in the performance of various tasks to include, but not limited to, survey calculations, draft sketches, and/or writing reports.

  • Completes data files, field books, daily log sheets, and other items to be used by office personnel for processing collected data.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience and/or Education needed for the GS-06 Level:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) experience obtaining geodetic, hydrographic, topographic, and/or survey control data AND, 2) experience operating, maintaining and/or servicing a variety of measuring instruments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Experience and/or Education needed for the GS-07 Level:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) experience obtaining geodetic, hydrographic, topographic, and survey control data AND, 2) experience operating, maintaining and servicing a variety of measuring instruments, AND 3) experience leading a team of individuals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Time-In-Grade requirement must be met no later than 30 days after the closing date of this announcement. Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) Position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade GS-05 for the GS 06 and/or GS 06 for the GS 07 (or equivalent). With regards to time-in-grade validation, if you held a position other than a GS pay plan, be sure your resume includes the pay plan and the salary you earned during the assignment. Without this information, your time-in-grade validation may not be able to be verified and will result in your not meeting the time-grade requirement for this vacancy.
