About the Position:

Venice Sub-Office is located about 80 miles south of New Orleans. It is at the end of Hwy 23, which is the only road in and out of the parish. It is a remote area and does not have public transportation. The housing in the area is limited. There is a public school but no private schools. There is limited shopping and the closest shopping center and place for entertainment is approx. 70 miles away.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts hydrographic surveys using thorough working knowledge of automatedhydrographic survey systems including on-board computers, data transmission equipment, data editing equipment and processes.

  • Coordinates activities with boat captain and is responsible for conducting, editing, and transmission of hydrographic surveys in the river and other localwaterways.

  • Completes hydrographic ranges of the waterway using fully automated survey systems; determines how ranges will be run and setup of equipment.

  • Monitors fathometer readings while running surveys and monitors the positional endpoints from the differential global positioning system; provides end-point data and uploads appropriate end-points from range to range.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes experience using survey equipment and related electronic equipment; and experience processing surveying data according to well-defined methods and established formulas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in applying an advanced knowledge of conventional and Global Positing Systems surveying methods to support hydrographic and obstruction investigation assignments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology .

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in selecting the most efficient surveying approach from several alternatives; redirecting team efforts in response to field conditions; AND arriving at sound and competent technical and administrative decisions for a wide variety of problems, and determining the acceptability of the results. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
