Anticipated starting salary for this position is $51,352.89 - $58,928.62 annually. The full salary range is $51,352.89 - $69,988.72 annually.

Position Summary: Under the general direction of the City Surveyor, this position will be responsible for the following general surveying and engineering duties: assist the City Surveyor in reviewing land subdivision plats, perform boundary, location, and topographic surveys, write legal descriptions, process public utility easements, right-of-way dedications and vacations, expand and improve the City Survey Control Network and perform various other survey-related tasks; assist the professional engineering staff with design surveys and drafting of public works improvement projects; assist the City GIS Supervisor with data collection and other survey-related tasks; assist City staff with construction stakeouts and staking file preparation; and respond to information inquiries from staff and the general public. Essential Functions:

Assist the City Surveyor with the processing of public utility easements, public right-of-way dedications, and public right-of-way and plat vacations. Prepare and review legal descriptions for use in easements, vacations, deeds and other documents. Assist the City Surveyor in reviewing subdivision plats.

Assist in the expansion of the City horizontal and vertical control network by performing field surveys and office tasks. Research record deeds, easements, plats, records of survey and other survey documents. Perform field surveys and create design and topographic map drawings from survey data for use as base maps for public works projects.

Assist in the compilation of field information and provide construction staking for projects on public streets, utilities and other projects as needed. Assist in the development and revision of electronic drawings showing accurate parcel boundaries, utility easement locations and street right-of-way locations for updates to the City GIS database. Maintain surveying and drafting equipment; order supplies as needed according to established procedures Assist the general public through personal and written contact in answering questions and locating information related to site development, public works and property related issues Assist in maintaining accurate records on the location of City rights-of-way, easements, City limits and City property Operate a variety of professional surveying equipment including GPS rovers, total stations, data collectors, levels, calculators and computers.

Interact in a professional manner with all City personnel, customers and other agencies. Gather utility information from project plans, field information, and other departments and add to the record maps and GIS database. Conduct site inspections for development improvement projects as needed.

Prepare and maintain a variety of official City maps and records; prepare reports related to daily activities and City requirements such as plat updates, subdivision and administrative plat files, right-of-way maps, easement maps, City property records, and archive records. Perform related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma and a minimum of two (2) years of progressive experience in land surveying or a two or four year college certificate or degree in land surveying.

Having passed the Fundamentals of Land Surveying Examination is a plus. Progressive experience using recent AutoDesk/AutoCad design, surveying and drafting software such as Civil 3D is a plus. Completion of AutoDesk/AutoCad training courses and college-level course work in civil engineering technology and land surveying are a plus.

Must possess a valid driver's license. Knowledge & Abilities: Professional surveying principles and practices.

Professional civil engineering design principles and practices. Operation of computers and use of engineering design, surveying and office software, including, but not limited to, AutoCad Civil 3D, Land Desktop, ArcReader and Microsoft Office. Operation and basic maintenance of professional surveying equipment including GPS rovers, total stations, data collectors, levels; especially Trimble surveying equipment.

Survey terminology and legal description writing techniques. Computer and manual drafting techniques. Record-keeping techniques.

Engineering plans and specifications. Good oral and written communication skills, including correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Operate and maintain a variety of surveying instruments.

Perform field surveys and field inspections. Take accurate and detailed field notes and measurements. Perform a variety of duties involving technical office and field engineering work, including the review and design of streets, sewers, water system, storm drainage, building and other residential improvements.

Understand, interpret and apply applicable laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures. Operate desktop and laptop computers and install, maintain and configure software and hardware. Interpret and write legal descriptions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Meet schedules and time lines, prioritize and schedule assigned tasks, maintain records. Sit for extended periods and intermittently be able to move, stand, kneel, stoop, bend and twist at the waist, walk, drive a passenger car, pickup truck, or van and work in all types of weather. See well, including close vision.

Work independently with little direction and meet deadlines. Work cooperatively with others and demonstrate good interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy to others.Working Conditions: Indoor and outdoor work environment, subject to adverse weather conditions; driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Sufficient body mobility, flexibility, and balance to perform duties in and around construction sites. Work in or around active traffic and or construction equipment.

Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodations, which permits the employee to review and evaluate complex project designs and plans and operate a computer or related equipment.

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodations, which permits the employee to, discern verbal instructions, effectively communicate with others in person or on the telephone. Occasionally, lifting or moving components weighing up to 50 pounds. Sufficient, dexterity of hand and fingers to operate a computer or related equipment.
