The purpose of this classification is to conduct field surveys and collect data used to develop plans, specifications, and controls for construction projects associated with the Public Works and Engineering department.Assists in the development of plans and specifications for engineering construction projects. Assists in the conducting infiltration and flow studies utilizing dye and smoke testing of sewer systems.

Develops survey information for quantitative estimations of maps, plats, plans, charts, quantitative estimates. Performs field surveys; sets up and operates survey instruments to locate obstacles, property lines, pipe manholes, utilities, and related objects/data; takes measurements; runs bench mark; runs levels; draws survey sketches. Profiles streets, alleys, holding ponds, and related landmarks; determines control points and right-of-ways; determines elevation.

Clears brush as needed to complete surveys; digs up utilities; stakes, pipe, curb, and gutter lines; sets grade for construction; clears lines. Researches and reviews a variety of plats, maps, field books, plans, deeds, and related materials; reviews, copies, records, files, and/or makes recommendations. Indexes field books and enters index into computer.

Operates a service truck in the performance of duties; cleans and maintains truck. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Ensures instruments and related equipment are available and operable. Performs other related duties as required.High school diploma or GED required; additionally, three (3) years previous experience and/or training involving field surveying and general construction work preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.Data Utilization:

Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization:

Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; requires the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may require the ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may require the ability to compute discount, interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportions; may require the ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures. Functional Reasoning:

Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. Situational Reasoning:

Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability: Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combinations of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. These tasks may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of relatively heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Sensory Requirements:

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors:

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, animal bites, toxic agents, or pathogenic substances.
