Job Description

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Civil Engineer II.

Performs responsible technical and skilled work as part of a survey party; does related work as required.

Essential Tasks

  • Compiles field measurements and readings for construction and engineering functions through use of various survey instruments.

  • Operates total stations, levels, data collectors and other survey instruments to secure data pertaining to lines, corners, elevations, grades, curves, alignments, and positions.

  • Records field notes and sketches.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on surveying equipment.

  • Locates and marks utility lines and performs stakeouts for construction crews.

  • Performs as-built surveys of completed projects.

  • Drives a service truck to and from job sites and transports tools, equipment, and supplies; Communicates with supervisor and other employees by two-way radio.

  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma

  • NC Driver's License

  • Formal education which includes reading, writing, and math equivalent to graduation from high school.

  • Completion of some basic surveying courses or one (1) year of field experience in land survey work.

  • Social skills to interact as a team player.

Physical Requirements

  • Hearing/Speaking; Expressingand/or receiving information by means of spoken word and perceiving nature of sounds by ear are both necessary to converse with supervisor, other employees, property owners, government officials and the general public in person and by telephone.

  • Visual Abilities

  • Ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye.
  • Acuity (far) - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/30 - R 20/30 - L-20/30 corrected.

  • Acuity (near) - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see reading material, forms, reports, etc. Both eyes 20/22 corrected.

  • Depth Perception

  • Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships to see objects where and as they are. Must be able to judge distances for safe operations motor vehicles. Depth perception

  • Field of Vision
  • The area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Necessary for the safe operation of motor vehicles and for use of optical surveying equipment.
  • Accommodation
  • Must be able to adjust the eye lens to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye. Necessary when looking at various field conditions, building systems at varying distances.

  • Degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
  • Exerting more than 50 pounds of force occasionally, 50 or more with assistance; and/or more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Requires walking, standing, climbing, sitting, climbing, bending, stooping, stretching, and the mobility to maneuver over both even and extremely uneven terrain, and the ability to make field observations in remote and difficult to reach outdoor locations.

  • Picking, pinching or otherwise working with fingers primarily rather than the entire hand or arm. Necessarytoholdpenorpenciltowrite,todialtelephone,tooperate draftingtools,computer,andotherofficeequipment.

Mental Activity/Requirements

  • Reasoning

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor or construction chiefs; to comprehend and respond to a variety of work situations and tasks in an expedient manner; to understand safety requirements. Good judgment is essential.

  • Mathematics Ability

  • Must be able to perform calculations that include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Language Ability

  • Ability to read and comprehend safety and other manuals, instructions, equipment readings, report information, codes, ordinances, rules, regulations, street names and signs, work orders and other documents relating to the job.

  • Ability to write figures, reports, and make notes as needed to complete records and reports.

  • Ability to be conversant in voice and diction to participate in discussions and communicate well with supervisor, co-workers and other City personnel, over two-way radio and by telephone; ability to perform proper and clear communication.

  • Physical Surroundings

  • Requiredtomonitorpublicworksandutilityprojects where the worker may encounter wet, hot, or cold extremes.

  • Mayhavetogo intoareas with limited horizontal and vertical clearances, or where areas are unsanitary in and around buildings and where areas have offensive odors.

  • May be required to maneuver over uneven terrain.

  • Hazards

  • Employee will be exposed to trash, debris, and insects.

  • Must negotiate uneven terrain.

  • Exposure to dust, dirt, mud, and wet conditions.

  • Employee must sometimes work within buildings and/or areas which are in a dangerous condition.

  • Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
