Are you ready to join The City of Burlington in our Engineering Department? We're seeking a dedicated individual to perform technical and supervisory land surveying work of a sub-professional civil engineering discipline.

Examples of Duties

  • Directs crew about elements needed to complete survey assignment and what equipment is needed.

  • Supervises the work of survey crew including daily activities and work schedules.

  • Instructing crew as to angles and distances is needed for them to turn and measure.

  • Records all information in field book including drawing detailed sketches.

  • Receives job specifics and information from engineers.

  • Plans work activities by collecting information from plants, tax maps, drawings and other information related to land parcels.

  • Gathers field books and plans and directs crew to gather instruments and equipment needed to complete work.

  • Maintains equipment and necessary supplies and purchases and requests new materials.

  • Conducts location surveys to determine the proper location of streets, sewers, and water lines.

  • Checks computation and alignment data and ascertains property lines.

  • In connection with topographic surveys, produces a map showing the nature and artificial features of a given area such as houses, roads, fences, and property lines.

  • Provides the construction crew with stakes giving the proper alignment and grade for street or storm sewer.

  • Makes daily and monthly reports relative to the progress of a survey party.

  • Gives instructions to subordinates in all phases of the work.

  • Assist the City Surveyor in preparing final plates and working maps.

  • Clearing vegetation and debris along survey lines and survey sites with approved clearing equipment

  • Reviews the work products of others to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures, federal regulations, reviews plans, and organizes field survey work activities.

  • Completes field notes to facilitate drafting of engineering plans and for legal requirements and to provide clear and precise information to engineers through the composition and compilation of the field book (including sketches and survey information).

  • Locates points on the ground, angles, elevations, distances and grades for designing roadways, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, curb gutters, and other municipal engineering projects.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of surveying principles and practices

  • Considerable knowledge of mathematics, including trigonometry

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering

  • Experience using CAD software for drafting and computations of survey data.

  • Experience using MS Office Applications

  • Demonstrated ability to reduce and plot field notes and to make field and office engineering computations.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency with 4 years' experience with experience on a survey party or Associate's Degree in Surveying or Civil Engineering and 1 years' experience on a survey party

  • Experience using surveying data collection equipment, including conventional surveying and GPS Surveys

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering

  • Previous experience working with a municipality or other public agency.

  • Experience using Carlson Survey Software

  • North Carolina License as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS)

Physical Requirements

  • Work in this class is described as medium using a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects and will require physical exertion to complete some tasks.

  • Work will require traversing uneven ground and will require good stability.

  • Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

  • Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned in preparing and analyzing figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal viewing and extensive reading.
