Position Summary

Why It's a Great Opportunity:

In this summer work extra hire position with Pierce County, you will assist a two-person Survey Crew in the restoration, preservation and replacement of Survey Monuments located within the public right-of-way. Survey monuments are objects placed to mark key survey points and are used in geodetic and land surveying. This position is a great experience for you if you have an interest or are currently studying in the areas of survey, GIS, land use, and other environmental studies.

As an extra hire maintenance worker, you will enjoy a regular schedule Monday - Friday with occasional overtime. You can count on Pierce County to provide PPE, tools, and a safe place to work. You will work out of South Puyallup various places in Pierce County.

How to be Successful in the Role:

In this role you will be mixing and pouring concrete, digging to set new monuments, or replacing existing monuments while also assisting the Survey Crew with the task of furnishing construction control stakes for County Road Projects. You will be part of a team that will setup/takedown high precision survey equipment, check mathematical computations, assist with the layout of engineered roadway plans and being an active member of a construction project.

This role will require you to bend, stoop, climb and walk on uneven terrain, and to work outdoors for extended periods, in all types of weather conditions. Additionally, you will be subject to prolonged physical exertion and hazardous road conditions; and frequent lifting of equipment and material, often weighing more than 50 pounds.

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • The ability to follow highly detailed written and verbal directions/instructions.

  • Read, understand, or learn engineering plans and specifications.

  • Be familiar with engineering standards and department policies.

  • Meet the travel requirements of the position.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One or more years of related work experience.

  • Equivalent combination of education/experience which would clearly indicate the ability to perform the duties of the position.

  • Must possess a valid WA State Driver's License and safe driving record.

Sick Leave

Extra hires are eligible to receive sick leave in accordance with the WA State Minimum Wage Act. Extra hires are not eligible for other County benefits.

Social Security

All Pierce County employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The county and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Pro-tem Judges in District Court, Pro-tem Superior Court Commissioners, Extra Hires with Retirement, and Work Study Students with Retirement are eligible for Retirement and Deferred Compensation and Social Security.

Pierce County employees are members of the State of Washington's Department of Retirement System (DRS) and depending on the position or previous DRS enrollment may be able to enroll in one of many programs DRS offers.
