Basic Qualifications:

Education:

This position requires a minimum of High School Diploma or GED. Documented training in certified NDT methods, ASNT, NAS410.

Experience:

Minimum of five years of NDT experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference given to candidates with the following NDT Level 2 certification.

Job Summary

This position will be training with the NDT Method Level III to become a Method Level 3 as well as learning to maintain the NDT program assigned to ensure skills and knowledge to interpret codes, standards and other contractual documents that control the method as utilized by Howmet Aerospace. Assist in solving problems in NDT technologies, interfacing with Engineers and Quality and Manufacturing representatives on NDT issues.

This position has responsibility to help control quality and technical functions for NDT processes, FPI, Visual, Ultrasonic and Radiographic Inspections. The NDT Surveillance Inspector shall be in training as the Level 3 in the NDT Method assigned and shall act as the Level 3 when needed.

This position requires an operator to be a certified Level 2 for a minimum of 3 years in one or more of the following NDT Methods assigned. Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection, Visual, Grain, Ultrasonic or Radiographic Inspection.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities

  • Follow Howmet's Safety Regulations and work Rules Handbook and all department specific safety requirements.

  • Assist with Inspector training under direction of the Level 3 in managing the facility NDT Level 2 program, including training, certification testing of Level 2 operators and approving and auditing plant training programs for NDT Level 1's and 2's.

  • Provides technical expertise in solving NDT problems, provides expertise in interpreting industry and customer specifications.

  • Functions as the Method Level 3 when the Method Level 3 is unavailable.

  • Maintains, implements, and manages NDT program for assigned method currently used at Hampton facility.

  • Assures customer NDT specifications compliance and satisfaction with NDT processes.

  • Works with the Method Level 3 to implement new inspection methods to lower NDT processes and equipment to ensure cost effectiveness.

  • Supports Howmet Aerospace as required to improve and promote NDT technology and assure the corporation's NDT programs are as cost effective and reliable as possible.

  • Assist the Method Level 3 to evaluate new NDT technologies to assure Howmet Aerospace remains competitive in the market and benefits from reductions in the cost of inspection. This would include such items as throughput, man hour reduction and reduction or elimination of inspection materials.

  • Must comply with all company attendance policies and guidelines; this includes, but is not limited to, regular attendance and occasional overtime.

  • Acts as a technical liaison for production employees concerning process or product related issues in NDT activities.

  • Confers with technicians, supervision, and engineering regarding process flow and product quality status.

  • Performs process control tests, product audits, inspector, and department audits, maintaining documentation in accordance with customer specifications and Howmet Activity Instructions.

  • Assist in inspections per customers' specifications to ensure accuracy of results for X-Ray NDT activities.

  • Assists in developing internal and external process procedures with customers' requirements.

  • Reviews and approves PC's, A.I.'s and Routings for NDT activities under the direction of the Method Level 3.

  • Maintains audit records and documentation per procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of inspecting parts as required by product criteria.

  • Ability to determine whether parts should be forwarded to next process or returned for more rework or scrapped.

  • Ability to communicate with inspectors and relate reasons for approvals, rework, or rejections. Keep records of results.

  • Must meet all requirements of Level II Inspector position.

  • Independent judgment is frequently required.

  • Must pass required certification with composite score of 80% every five years.

  • Must be able to perform constant mental concentration and close visual examination of various casting configurations per NDT method.

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.

  • Work requires basic skills in reading, writing and math plus the use of fractions and/or decimals.

  • The ability to perform interpretive defect analysis, follow simple instructions and visual aids.

  • Must be able to read and comprehend written and verbal instructions and sketches.

  • Must be able to assist in training new Method inspectors.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite, OCHAMS and IPC computer programs.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
