General Summary The OB Surgical Technologist is a professional caregiver who works with anesthesia, providers, and nursing staff to provide patient care before, during and after delivery. The OB Surgical Technologist uses sterile technique and demonstrates competence to perform surgical procedures in the OB setting. # Essential Duties and Responsibilities# Uses, cleans and cares for surgical instruments and equipment, sets up tables for delivery and surgical procedures in a sterile manner, stocks rooms after use. Notifies shift manager, director or other designee when supplies are low. Assists with cesarean sections and other surgical procedures in the C-Section suite on Obstetrics. Anticipates surgical team needs, demonstrates dexterity and proficiency. Demonstrates proper aseptic, sterile technique, and knowledge of surgical scrub technique. Completes safety rounds on patients, performs fundal rubs, vital signs, peri-care, toileting, walking patients, and other patient care assistant duties as assigned. Performs postpartum care, assists patients with warm/cold packs, binder application. Collects specimen, empties foley catheters and documents I#O. Nursery duties include: infant vital signs, infant safety rounds, infant feeds/baths/changing diapers/ recording wets/stools. NOTE: With additional training and demonstrated competency, techs are able to perform infant heel-sticks for specimen collection, hearing screens, and circumcision procedure set-up. Communicates changes in condition/behavior of a patient to the primary nurse or shift manager. Job Qualifications Education Graduate of Surgical Technologist program or nursing program with additional on the job training in surgical procedures/aseptic technique. Work Experience Experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse desired but not required. Certification/License American Heart Association BLS certification required prior to completion of orientation; preference will be given to those with certification as a CST. Mental/Physical Requirements Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Working Conditions Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
