Surgical technologists work under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique to combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.


  • Prepares and anticipates instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for usage during the procedure.

  • Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.

  • Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.

  • Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the briefing process.

  • Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.

  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.

  • Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate

  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.

  • Assists other members of the team with cleaning the operating room to facilitate turn overs.

  • Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.

  • Assists in the development of a proper learning environment in relation to orientation and education of personnel and students.

A. Education / Training: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.

B. Work Experience: Preferred but not required.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration: Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred. Certification mandated within 6 months of date of hire. Membership to the AST preferred but not required.

D. Other Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, organizational skills, and able to adapt to rapidly changing environment.


A. Physical Effort: Able to stand for long periods. Able to lift/move instrument pans and equipment using proper body mechanics.

B. Work Environment: Restricted, sterile environment with controlled humidity and temperature.

Responsibilities: * Gathers necessary demographic and clinical information and enters into appropriate database. Seeks appropriate resources to resolve issues about the type, date or location of prescribed procedures. May communicate pre-service requirements and instructions. * Schedules patient procedures in a manner that most efficiently utilizes the time and clinical resources. Makes necessary adjustments to the surgical schedule as changes occur to coordinate resources. * Coordinates and communicates schedules. * May assist with the coordination of activities, such as insurance pre-certification/authorization and resource usage and changes. * May be responsible for accurately verifying each individual patient operative record for charging purposes. Responsibilities may include all aspects of patient charging for monthly revenues; including CDM coding and accurate supply costs according to Peoplesoft. Verifies all implant and updating of supply module before accepting patient record for billing purposes. Requisitions supplies and maintains upkeep of surgical equipment. * May collaborate with Medical Affairs to enter new physicians and delineation of privileges. Responsible for accurate data entry to the Physician Suspension List requiring constant communication with Medical Records incomplete chart room. * Performs all other duties and projects as assigned.
