Perioperative Services strives to be the safest perioperative environment in the world, to have the highest quality of perioperative outcomes, and to demonstrate the core values in our vision. Partnered with Anesthesiology and Critical Care, the Division of Nursing and the Division of Surgery, this multidisciplinary team performs more than 15,000 surgical cases each year in more than 30 operating rooms spanning the Main Building and Mays Clinic.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and at least one year of recent surgical technologist experience.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Accountability:

  • Practices safely by adhering to all standards, guidelines, policies & procedures and serving as a resource for others about appropriate actions.

  • Demonstrates integrity and accountability by addressing breaks in technique and unsafe conditions.

  • Adds value to role by demonstrating flexibility and cross-training to other services outside of assigned quad.

  • Organizes workflow (contributes to on-time surgery starts, works to turnover cases as efficiently as possible); appropriately allocates/uses and leads others to efficiently use resources (time, materials, supplies, equipment, personnel).

  • Maintains stability in performance while under pressure and handles crisis and difficult situations without inappropriate emotionality.

  • Puts away all supplies & equipment after case.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of operational costs, participates in cost-saving strategies, and avoids wastes of supplies, resources.

  • Completes annual self-appraisal and provides appropriate documentation.

Clinical Practice:

  • Demonstrates competency in performance of responsibilities during surgical procedures.

  • Plans for cases by ensuring appropriate resources are consulted for information.

  • Prepares all supplies/equipment necessary for cases as indicated on preference cards and has available for procedure but opens only if certain it will be needed.

  • Assembles, inspects and connects equipment to ensure safe, clean and correct functioning (all pieces present, instrumentation clean, assembled correctly).

  • Initiates patient safety measures (temperature of solutions/instruments, avoidance of pressure points on patient, instrumentation appropriate in size and nature to preserve integrity of tissues, etc.) and follows sponge, instrument, & sharps count policy & procedure.

  • Checks with circulator for all medications, solutions, hemostatic agents delivered to the field; correctly labels and prepares according to policy/procedure, standards of care, and/or manufacturer's instructions.

  • Handles, labels, and transports specimens safely according to policy and procedure.

  • Handles and delivers prosthetics to the field in a way that maintains sterility and preserves integrity.

Teamwork:

  • Communicates within and among team members in a healthy, constructive way, avoiding participation in destructive behaviors that block team efforts.

  • Values the contributions of all team members and publicly recognizes their efforts.

  • Gains the trust of others by demonstrating consistency in practice of principles, values, and behavior as well as using good listening skills, expressing ideas clearly, promoting open communication.

  • Communicates effectively with circulator to ensure care of patient and rhythm of case progresses.

  • Scrubs, sets up, counts in a timely manner so that other team member roles are not impeded.

  • Remains actively engaged in surgery, focused on operative field, and anticipates needs of surgeon without having to be coached or reminded. Improves personal performance by pursuing learning opportunities to broaden knowledge base and build depth/variety in clinical experience.

  • Assesses own performance and actively seeks feedback related to clinical performance, interpersonal relationships, contributions to teamwork and participation in improvement efforts.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certification/Licensure

One of the following: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). New graduate must obtain and maintain certification by the 180th day after date of hire date. Employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility prior to September 1, 2009. Completed appropriate training program for surgical technology in the military of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service.
